BPM: Bullets per Minute review

Introduction

Today we are going to look at another game with a rhythm. BPM, or as we are going to call it in this review, Bullets per Minute. Once again we are going to shoot on the beat. Why do I keep trying these games? I should know by now, these games are not my thing. Oh well, how bad could it go, right? We will just spawn into a dungeon, and shoot up some demons. No story needed, just some music, and shoot, if you can do it on the beat.

What did I think before playing Bullets per Minute?

I have played Metal Hellsinger recently, and then I discovered, I have another game like that in my Steam Library. Waiting to be played. How bad can it be? Just shoot, right? Nope, once again we have to do it on the beat. These rhythmic shooters can be very hard to play. You really need to hear the beat, and I am very bad at hearing the beat. Why don’t we check the Steam page for more information?

The Steam Page

The Steam page explains the enemies are going to do a dance sequence for me. Is it too late to turn around? Somebody, please let me out. I do not want to see dancing enemies! Well, we just need to focus on shooting enemies on the beat, can I do this blindfolded? Get overpowered, yeah right, if I can listen to the beat! Awesome more characters, if this is going to be like the previous rhythm games, I will never see them and just keep on dying by dancing flies or bats.

Rating

I rate Bullets per Minute with a 7.1 before playing.
Oh god, I hope the dancing enemies are not too bad.

Gameplay

Bullets per Minute is a rogue like game with randomly generated dungeons. There is a bank to store coins, if it gets generated. The shop is some kind of giant chicken. It mostly sells health. The enemies luckily do not dance too much, but they are moving around a lot. It is already hard enough to shoot on the beat. You can find different guns, and they all work differently to shoot on the beat.

While you walk through the random generated dungeon, you will find shrines. You can offer these shrines coins, these coins can be gained by clearing a room. The better that you shoot on the beat, the more coins you will receive. There is also a chance to receive a key. These are needed to open doors and chests. You might find coins, a new weapon, or even a new ability!

If you want to unlock new characters, you need to defeat the bosses, but you will die rather quick. Shooting at the beat is just not my thing. Maybe I should just stick to other first-person shooter games. However, the gameplay works quite well, it can be fun, especially if you can hear the beat! Damn that beat, how can it be so hard to shoot on the beat? Maybe there is a way to disable the rhythm feature.

Rating

I rate the gameplay of Bullets per Minute with a 6.9.
While the game is fun, it is not something unique or special.

Sound and Graphics

Graphics

While the areas look quite generic and have a very basic dungeon vibe. The enemies look better when they are jumping and flying around on the beat. It makes them harder to hit while also focusing on the beat. While this game looks very basic. It does not mean you cannot have fun, just do not expect too much from the graphics.

Sound

The sound is very important in this game. Since you will see the enemies dancing on the beat. It also means you will need to kill them on the beat. Can you do it!? It depends on your skill to recognize the rhythm, which is not my forte.

Rating

I rate the sound and graphics of Bullets per Minute with a 6.7
While the graphics are very basic, the dancing enemies are fun to look at and the soundtracks are fun to listen to, but to be honest, nothing special.

What did I think after playing Bullets per Minute

The rogue-like elements are fun, but the rhythm keeps me from unlocking the new characters. While you can bank some coins, it is hard to find a bank at all. And then comes the challenge to take your coins from the bank when you need them. There is not a starting area, which is a shame. It would have been a perfect addition.

All the guns have a different rhythm, including when they reload. Which means that reloading a shotgun can be a very troublesome, unless you are a beat monster. Man, why do I keep playing these games? Just give me some pirate metal, oh wait, I can include my own music to this game. How does it work? That is something I need to look into!

Rating

I rate Bullets per Minute with a 7.0 after playing.
While this game is fun, there can be a lot of improvements to improve the game. See what I did there?

What are my personal thoughts about Bullets per Minute

While I did have some fun when playing this game. I rather play a few more stable rogue-like games, where there is a clear goal in mind. And not some rhythm based shootout.

Rating

My personal Rating of Bullets per Minute is 5.5.
There are rhythm games that are much better compared to this one. It also seems the difficulty is all over the place, but that can be just me.

Last Words

Pros

Cons

While it is fun to run around shooting the dancing enemies, this game feels very basic. If you are looking for some fast-paced action, this is not the game you are looking for, unless you have a sick beat!

Final Rating

6.9/10

Moving on beat feels so good because you’re essentially dancing, but by pressing your fingers instead of swinging your hips.

This one was very refreshing. It’s like those music games, Dance Dance Revolution, Beat Sabre, but this one’s with FPS elements, and pretty good FPS at that. Loving it.
