Introduction

We are going to review our first Dragon Quest game ever, and not just any Dragon Quest game, we are going to look at Dragon Quest Heroes 1! This is a spin off that features a lot of hack and slashing. However, you have skill trees to customize and many equipment pieces to find. There are also characters from other Dragon quest games, there are so many party members!

What did I think before playing Dragon Quest Heroes 1?

We were looking for a fun hack and slash game, when on the Playstation Pass, multiple Dragon Quest Heroes had been added. That is when I recognized this game, it was a hack and slash game. I did not know anymore how it worked but, both my wife and I were very intrigued. There was only one way to find out more information, we decided to check out the Steam page for the best information!

The Steam Page

It is not just another Dragon Quest, which is what I see where a lot of people go wrong. They see the name Dragon Quest, and think, oh it is just another Dragon Quest game. And then, they plat it, and they find out it is an hack and slash game, thus giving it a bad review. This game also has a lot of tower defense elements. If you do not want to strategize, this might not be the game for you, but mostly, you are going to whack a lot of monsters!

Rating

I rate Dragon Quest Heroes 1 with a 7.6 before playing!
If you are interested in whacking some monster, goo ahead and buy this game, slurp!

Story

In this realm, humans and monsters co-exist with each other and there is peace across the land. Everything seems to go as planned in Arba as festivities take place. However, a dark mist covers the land and suddenly all monsters become aggressive! There are two captains of Arba who stand up to take them out and get to the root of this problem!

Rating

I rate the story of Dragon Quest Heroes 1 with a 7.3.
While the story is not unique per se, it is still enjoyable where you will meet a wide array of different characters!

Gameplay

When you begin the game, you will learn very fast, that you have to whack monsters, but you also have special skills to unleash on the enemies. As you kill them, you will gain experience points, do not forget to pick up the loot, or it will vanish. You are going to need the loot to make accessories. There is also a fee to make these items. Gold can be gained by slaughtering enemies!

When you level up, you will be able to spend your skill points on a wide array of active and passive skills. These are needed to upgrade your characters. With your gold, you can also buy new weapons and armor. With each new chapter, there will be new items to buy in the store. If you need an edge in battle, you can pick up monster medals and let the monsters fight for you, make sure to see if they are sentry medals, otherwise, it is just a one-time special.

You can take four people into battle with you. While your eventual party will exist out of more than ten characters. This allows for a lot of freedom in how you build your party but I advise to take Terry with you, that guy is a powerhouse with his skills! As you battle, you will gain tension, when this bar is full, you can become super strong and use an ultimate skill that will wipe the floor with all those enemies!

Rating

I rate the gameplay of Dragon Quest Heroes 1 with an 8.4.
While the gameplay can become a bit repetitive, it is very fun to whack some enemies!

Sound and Graphics

Graphics

While the graphics are great and consistent, with very few glitches. There is a low variety of monsters and varieties will come in other cities. Luckily, there are a lot of different places where you will battle with enemies! I also like that the weapons change when you buy a new one! The cut scenes are also amazing, however, how the characters speak is, well, let’s get to that in the sound section.

Sound

The soundtracks are great, I love listening to the music! The sound effects are also fun, but then the voices! There is nothing wrong with the voices, but the broken English is, really broken. It just, makes no sense. It is fun however at times.

Rating

I rate the sound and graphics of Dragon Quest Heroes 1 with a 6.1.
While the game is fun to look at, the broken English makes the game, hard to understand, to say the least.

What did I think after playing Dragon Quest Heroes 1?

My wife and I had a lot of fun when playing this game. However, there is one thing that we got annoyed about. At first, it is just, whack the monsters. But then, almost every mission starts to turn into a mission to protect something or someone. And these characters or items die very easily! Which can make it annoying to replay the mission a lot of times. However, you can always go back to grind some experience points and loot!

You can also collect mini medals for awesome gear! These can be gained by doing quests, getting achievements, or even killing enough specimens of one monster. You can sometimes find them randomly in a level. If you open a chest, be careful, it might be a death mimic waiting for you, these are, really nasty!

Rating

I rate Dragon Quest Heroes 1 with a 7.5 after playing.
Why do we need to protect so many things!

What are my personal thoughts about Dragon Quest Heroes 1?

It was a very fun game, it is great to kill some time as you mindlessly whack some monsters. It also allows you to switch characters, making the most of their skills!

Rating

My personal Rating of Dragon Quest Heroes 1 is a 8.7
It was a fun mindless hack and slash game, the broken English was fun, it made me spurt tea out of my nose.

Despite absolutely enjoyed this game, I will say too I found the missions to be repetitive with the objectives remaining the same; kill all the enemies.

This game looks fun, though I wonder if it deterred some long-time Dragon Quest fans? Apparently not too much, considering it got a sequel and seems to be looked back on well. I also wonder about any references and characters that general audiences may not catch onto! Also, I appreciate finding the humor in shaky translations, I don’t think they’re always worth the uproar some of them garner online!

I’ve always wanted to play this game but my laptop wouldn’t be able to run it (it still can’t). Thanks for the thorough review!

Yup such games often get repetetive quick (not all of them i guess but most).
But if you please I can give you examples of games i enjoyed enormously which were more around complex fight mechanics (not only around combos/special ablities): “Chivalry Medieval Warfare”, very old game “Die By The Sword” or “Mirage: Arcane Warfare” (already closed game unfort.).. from very old games amazing “Ecstatica” 1 and 2) but those are different genre anyway i’m sure many would still enjoy those games 🙂
