Introduction

Today we will be slithering into a new review, this is a game that we see come by in free bundles a lot, a game that, well, most likely sucks, but there is only one way to find out. We are talking about Snake Pass, in this game you control the snake called Noodle and his, well, bird thing. This is a game that I have been looking at for a long time, so, it is time to find out, what has Snake pass to offer?

What did I think before playing Snake Pass?

In Snake Pass you will need to slither your way around levels while collecting items, secrets and keystones. Once you have found the keystones, you can go to the next level, but I was no sure what to expect from this game. I have heard many complaints about it, but what be so bad about being a snake? Perhaps the camera? Or is it something else? For more information I am going to the Steam page!

The Steam Page

There seem to be fifteen levels in this snakey game, slither and crawl, well, you also need to climb some walls. It seems there are enjoyable soundtracks, at least that is something! There is also a secret to solve, but I am more interested in the gameplay as the story sounds very weak! However, there is only one true way to find out! It is time to slither into every nook and cranny, perhaps this snake can crawl into a pickle jar?

Rating

I rate Snake Pass with a 5.7 before playing.
This game does not really seem like a game, where you go, yay, I really need to play this. I have already skipped it many times when choosing a game to review. I just thought, let’s get it over with it!

Story

The story of Snakepass is fairly simple, you are a snake, yes, have you figured that out yet? You, are,a snake! Now, go slither in every nook and cranny to gather the keystones, and then you can open the gate to the level, you must repeat this process fifteen times to find the gatecrasher!

Rating

I rate the story of Snake pass with a 5.3.
The story does get you going, but that is about it, there is no, oomph in this story.

Gameplay

The gameplay sounds fairly simple, slither around and collect items, well, on one hand, it is simple, on the other hand it is not. The controls are very janky and I don’t even want to begin about the annoying camera. If you play with a keyboard, you will easily press the wrong button, most likely the pause button. This has happened to me, many, many times! It is just so close to the other buttons.

Once you try to get the hang of the controls, you need to move around, Noodle is very slow, and you need to slither left and right to increase your speed. It builds up very slowly, but you lose your speed in a second. If you would just go straight ahead, you would never even reach the end. That is how slow, you will go. And the climbing, oh, god, please don’t get me started on the climbing mechanics!

Many collectibles are on top of small hills, or a structure but climbing up is insanely hard. The camera keeps spinning, the hitbox to latch onto a pole is tiny, the bird thingy, does not even help you. But, if you can manage to climb up, it is your goal to gather the keystones to unlock a new hell, I mean level.

Rating

I rate the gameplay of Snake Pass with a 3.1.
There are just so many things broken in this game, it is just not fun anymore.

Sound and Graphics

Graphics

The graphics do look cute, I mean, who doesn’t love a friendly snake? The levels and environment however, they all look a bit too much the same. It is like, the same level over and over again but with just a new structure in the way. And it takes ages to get to that structure! The text also takes up a huge amount of the screen, then my focus is gone completely!

Sound

The soundtracks are fun, as are the sound effects, but to be honest, I was too annoyed by the game itself to enjoy the soundtracks.

Rating

I rate the sound and graphics of Snake Pass with a  6.2.
Well, at least you have something nice to look at when struggling to get up a weird building, who makes these odd buildings anyway?

What did I think after playing Snake Pass?

This game was not fun, it started in the beginning, I struggled with getting the snake forward, the weird movement dance that you need to do, made no sense, in real life, perhaps. In a game? It is totally not efficient for a video game, where real logic should not apply, this snake should have grown wings, that would have helped with making this game better!

The hardest, and most annoying part of this game was the camera. It just kept on spinning, there was no end to it. Every time I thought I was going to make it, the camera just turns and, bam! Once again, the snake falls. They should have called this game, spinny snake.

Rating

I rate Snake Pass with a 4,0 after playing.
That camera is insane!

What are my personal thoughts about Snake Pass?

To be honest, I am glad this game is over, it was not fun at all. If you are looking for a fun and casual game, this is not the game that you are looking for!

Rating

My personal Rating of Snake Pass is a 2.5.
Nope, just, nope!

Last Words

Pros

Cons

If you want to get dizzy, just play this game, no need for spinning in real life!

a very mediocre platformer in my opinion, but the idea itself is quite unique. still, in a world full of better 3D platforming games, like Crash Bandicoot or Ratchet & Clank, for me it was an easy pass after 15 minutes of playing it..

A shame about the gameplay, I really liked the main character and the colorful world he inhabited. It sounds like there’s better platformers out there…still, it’s fun to watch streamers play this game and rage at the physics!

The only problem I have with Snake Pass is really the camera. It gives me a headache in about 20 minutes of playing the game.
