New Super Luigi U Deluxe review

Introduction

Today we are going to jump into another Mario, no wait, Luigi game! While we did look at New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe already, we are going to look New Super Luigi Bros U Deluxe this time. What is the biggest difference? The over world map is the same, the route can be the same, the bosses are even the same, this is still a different game and most of the levels are different. You also have less time to complete the levels, to make sure you get faster at the end of the level, you can find new upgrades.

What did I think before playing New Super Luigi U Deluxe review?

It is just another jumping game, you can choose from all the same characters, but it is a completely different game. You will still need to complete all the levels and find the star coins. We were not going to try this game in co-op due to the bad experience in the original game that this game is based upon. There is not a good Nintendo page, thus we went to the Wikipedia page.

The Wikipedia page

The version that we played is the deluxe version, however, most of the things remain the same. There are no checkpoints in any level, the level design is much harder, and you will slip a lot, mostly right into a pit. This means that you will lose a lot more lives compared to the original game.  This makes the game much more fast-paced, you need your reflexes to survive!

Rating

I rate New Super Luigi U Deluxe with a 5.5 before playing.
While I did like that there was an alternate game, it would also have broken co-op. All the characters are playable, including Mario.

Story

The story is the same as in the original game, except for Mario saving the day, Luigi will save the day by saving Princess Peach.

Rating

I rate the story of New Super Luigi U Deluxe with a 1.0
It is even the same story, not even a slight alteration to the main story.

Gameplay

The gameplay is very similar to the original game, you complete the levels while collecting the star coins. While most of the mechanics remain the same, as walking in the over world map. You can still choose paths, but you will need to complete all levels if you want to see the special world.

There are some new upgrades that you can collect, these can also be stored in your storage. For example, you can use a penguin suit in the snow world, you do need to be fast as each level only has 100 seconds for you to finish it. If you like checkpoints, you can forget about that, there are zero checkpoints in this game.

If you enjoyed the original game but you would like it to be harder, this is the perfect game for you!

Rating

I rate the gameplay of New Super Luigi U Deluxe with a 3.0
The gameplay has slight alterations, but this game is just the game again, but it uses different levels.

Sound and Graphics

Graphics

The graphics of New Super Luigi Bros U Deluxe are exactly the same, however you do have some new upgrades. I think they could have changed more to make sure this game got more attention. There are hidden Luigi drawings in the game, though.

Sound

The sound is the same, even for the cutscenes, I do not understand why they could not alter some soundtracks.

Rating

I rate the sound and graphics of New Super Luigi U Deluxe with a 2.7
This is just a copy and paste job, if it were a separate game again, it would have been a huge cash grab that Nintendo manufactured.

What did I think after playing New Super Luigi U Deluxe?

I was just bored, I am usually not bored with a game quickly, even if it is using the same elements from another game. The levels look a lot like New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe. The slipping mechanic caused for more deaths than I liked to admit, it was pushed to the max.

The levels are designed to be hard, but they are very short. The new upgrades could have been added in the original game, it would have been better. I would rather pick one of the two games instead of playing both of the games. It is a shame that on the Wii U you needed to purchase a whole new game to get this new game mode.

Rating

I rate New Super Luigi U Deluxe with a 5.0 after playing.
While this game is fun, it is less fun if you played the original game, I would rather pick one of two games.

What are my personal thoughts about New Super Luigi U Deluxe?

Instead of collecting all the star coins like in New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe, I just rushed as fast as possible to the final battle. Which was much harder but still doable!

Rating

My personal Rating of New Super Luigi U Deluxe is 3.3
I enjoyed the Super Mario game a lot more!

I really hate the trend of Nintendo milking their IPs and making stupid cash grabbing marketing and production decisions, like with their mobile games and microtransactions in them, the Pokemon games still having pointless two versions of each game that are ridiculously expensive on the Switch, and this Luigi game! Why couldn’t Luigi and his mode and costumes just been unlockable in the regular game, or even DLC? There’s no reason for two separate versions of the same game with only minor differences!! (Again, looking at you Pokemon!)

That is sad they put such a low effort game out! They really take advantage of the fact that some people will buy any Nintendo game! They could have tried much more to make this a unique game that stands out from the original 🙁 Thank god I never got this one!
