Introduction
Today we are going to Japan, aka we are going to play Nioh! It has been a while since we have played this game, as it was planned a long time ago, but somehow we never got around to reviewing Nioh. However, we will finally review this game that likes to plague you with hard difficulty, a lot of deaths, and various levels that will test your mettle!
What did I think before playing Nioh?
I always like to play Dark Souls like games, thus Nioh was on our to play list! We were interested in how the dying aspect would work in this game. This game takes place in Japan around the year 1600. You play as William, a swordsman that is on the search for a place where a new kind of mineral can be found, Amrita. For more information, we went to the Steam page!
The Steam Page
https://store.steampowered.com/app/485510/Nioh_Complete_Edition___Complete_Edition/
There is not a lot of information on the complete page of Nioh, the main thing is that you will have all the DLC! It is clear that you will need to slay yokai, demons that feed off Amrita, slay them to gain Amrita which you can use to get stronger by leveling up! You will also find new equipment when slaying enemies!
Rating
I rate Nioh with an 8.6 before playing.
If you are interested in Dark Souls like games, then Nioh is a game that you need to play! It is time to die!
Story
William is captured and hold captive after obtaining Amrita for the queen, this is to keep this new mineral a secret. William breaks out of the tower with a spirit guardian, but during the escape his guardian spirit, that keeps him from dying ever, is captured and taken to Japan. William finds a boat and scours the ocean to find Japan to save his guardian spirit!
Rating
I rate the story of Nioh with a 7.7.
The story is quite good, with a lot of historical figures making an appearance!
Gameplay
I hope you have fast reflexes, as you will need to hack and slash fast in combat to avoid death! However, do not expect that you only have access to one type of weapon. There are multiple melee weapons like dual swords or even axes! You can select levels from the world map, these also include the goal that you need to reach. There are usually multiple ways to reach the end and multiple paths to search for loot!
You will have health potions that will be restocked when you stop at a shrine, this is also where you can level up! If you see an enemy that is out of range, you can also use a different ranged weapon throughout the game! As you kill enemies, you will also gain skill points that you can use for different skill trees. Depending on the stance that you take in combat, you can invest skill points in the combat style that you prefer.
As you progress through the game, you will also find new guardian spirits that you can freely switch between when at a shrine. All guardians have different abilities and passives to help you. If you want to get stronger, you can also upgrade your equipment at the blacksmith with the gold that enemies drop! There are also small spirits that you can hunt to get small bonuses like finding more health potions! There is a lot more to Nioh, but I will let you find that out for yourself!
Rating
I rate the gameplay of Nioh with a 9.6.
If Nioh does something right, it is the gameplay! There is also an endless mode called the abyss and daily changing missions!
Sound and Graphics
Graphics
While it has been a while since Nioh 1 released, the graphics are still amazing! There are a lot of cutscenes, but you might need English subs as almost everyone speaks Japanese. There are also a lot of enemy variety, but most of them are evil Yokai. You will also encounter a lot of traps that might kill you, but do not worry, if you die you can still get your Amrita back, that is, if you survive!
Sound
I had quite some trouble with everyone speaking Japanese, but luckily there are English subs! The cutscenes have a lot of good voice acting and music!
Rating
I rate the sound and graphics of Nioh with an 8.1.
I enjoyed watching the cutscenes of Nioh!
What did I think after playing Nioh
My wife and I had quite some fun when playing Nioh, we actually started this game on our vacation! We were looking for a fun game to play and bought this in the game store. We had a great deal of fun when playing through the main story and DLC, at the end of the game you can upgrade the difficulty to die even more!
As you continue throughout the game, you will be able to upgrade your armor and weapons, as well as collect armor sets with special abilities! There are also accessories that will benefit you! Do not forget to collect gold as you go, otherwise upgrading will be impossible!
Rating
I rate Nioh with a 7.8 after playing.
While the game is very fun, it can become repetitive as you keep on playing, but it depends on the way that you play games!
What are my personal thoughts about Nioh
I did enjoy this game but the daily missions and abyss, you could play forever but at some time, you are just done with the game, however this could take a lot of time when you play Nioh!
Rating
My personal Rating of Nioh is an 8.9!
I enjoyed this game a lot!

If you liked reading this review, maybe you would like to share this review with your friends!
I agree 8.4 point its good game.
Good review. If you want the best items you must go into the abyss of grind.
The best items are in the Abyss lol!
it seems it is a very good game! got it for free from epic, I gotta try it 🙂 thanks for reviewing it!
Sitting in my Epic library waiting to be played. Your positive review might be the nudge I needed to finally give it a try.
I’m a little worried about the length and repetitiveness though. It’s 44 hours long according to How Long to Beat. Yikes!
It all depends on how skilled you are in gaming how long it will take!
Cool game!
Souls-like games are great, with stuff this one added and it’s theme it’s so cool
This is indeed a fun and cool game!
“Upgrading items can be very expensive”
wait till you play Dying Light 2 then lol
I will have to try it in the future!
Although I’ve certainly heard of the Souls-like genre (I think you’d have to be living under a rock if you hadn’t!), I’m not too familiar with the games of the genre. I don’t mind difficulty, but not too much of it, and I mostly stick to more niche and indie genres. Still, this game definitely looks interesting, definitely the sort of game I’d like to check out when it’s on a sale, and it’s always fun to learn about other countries’ cultures and histories as well.
If you do not mind the difficulty, this might be the perfect game for you!
Not my thing, but I get why the genre has so many fans.
Seems interesting. Is it any good playing with mouse/keyboard or playing with controller the way to go?
Controller is the way to go!
It’s like Onimusha and Dark Souls combined!
What game is the first?
In a simple way I would say that it’s like the first Resident Evils but set in the feudal Japan and their folklore
Thanks for this review. I haven’t paid my attention to this game yet, and maybe I should try it. Story, gameplay, learning and upgrading your equipment – all of these are of interest for me, and you have given high marks to it.
I hope that you will enjoy this game when you start playing it!
Great game, as an extra data I would add that, unlike the game from which it takes a little bit of inspiration, it doesn’t have real invasions/pvp, but you can summon another player through his tomb to fight, except that this character is not controlled by another player but is controlled by the cpu. This can be a good way to farm equipment because when you defeat another player’s character it can drop some of the equipment it has equipped
Oh yeah, that is true, but we never look much at those multiplayer aspects! We will do that in the future!
Nioh may be not easy to finish, but I cannot deny the beautiful aesthetic, an amazing combat system, some of the most unique enemy designs and a great soundtrack. Good review!
game looks awesome, hope to play it one day
I hope that you will enjoy it!
