Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild review

Introduction

Today we are going to look at Legend of Zelda, Breath of the Wild! We are going into the wild and explore an abundance of shrines to collect more hearts and stamina! This will be the first time that Link will find himself in an open world, albeit with not many villages or non-playable characters walking around! It is your goal to stop Ganondorf after he has already wrecked most of the land, but is currently stuck in Hyrule Castle! Or, you could explore, get sidetracked a lot, and forget about that completely!

What did I think before playing Legend of Zelda Breath of the wild?

I did not know what to expect when I started playing this game, my wife and I both enjoy Legend of Zelda games, but a lot of the times they end up in our humongous backlog! We also wanted to find chickens off course to annoy them! Who knows, they might attack us again! For more information on this game, we visited the Nintendo page!

The Nintendo page

https://www.zelda.com/breath-of-the-wild/
This page is quite extensive with multiple tabs on information, before playing you might want to check out the feature section of the site! This section will mention the shrines that you need to visit, the towers that give access to the world map, over 180 weapons to collect, a lot of clothing and even more! Off course, to play the whole game, you will need two season passes!

Rating

I rate Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild with an 8.1 before playing.
While the game does look great, a few caveats are worth noting, the breaking of weapons, the expensive DLC that you will need, and off course, the Korok seeds!

Story

While stories of Legend of Zelda are usually epic and very forward, this game takes a whole different approach as you must find the story in certain locations! I have recorded all the main story memories and created a video for you to watch!

The story starts with Link waking up from a hundred-year nap, those muscles gotta hurt by then! As a weakling you must use a stick to fight off enemies, eat some apples, to eventually recover your lost memories and defeat Ganondorf, also called Calamity Ganon in this game!

Rating

I rate the story of Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild with a 6.2.
While I like the idea of gathering memories, the story feels very bland, and it just fades to the background as you explore side quests and shrines!

Gameplay

Most of your gameplay will consist of gathering weapons, since your old weapon broke! This is also the problem with shields until you get excellent gear that can take a few hits! After exploring some shrines, you get new skills, like summoning bombs or making ice pillars, these can also be used to kill enemies! Otherwise, your broom might break!

You will also gain special abilities when clearing one of the four main dungeons which are technically walking, mechanical beasts! You might need gear that prevents you from freezing to reach certain places in the game, or clothing that keeps you cool! The open world feels quite empty, as sometimes you can go hours without even seeing a non-playable character! There are also shrines scattered around to gain more hearts and stamina!

The largest part of the game, you will be collecting Korok seeds, there are 900 of them! After gathering a few too many, you will probably quit, as the reward is a golden turd! If you do want to find them, you might need the Korok mask! Eventually, when you are ready you can face Calamity Ganon, it does not even matter if you have cleared the main dungeons first, but it does make the final fight harder.

Rating

I rate the gameplay of Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild with a 7.2.
While the game is good, there are some problems like breaking weapons, too many Korok seeds, a very empty open world, not enough unique items and a lot more! While there is a lot more to do in Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild, I will let you figure that out for yourself!

Sound and Graphics

Graphics

The graphics of Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild are better than I would have expected, there are many items to collect, but there is one huge caveat! There is not a lot of enemy monster variety, while most of the monsters have upgraded versions, these are usually just color pallet swaps, for example the red Moblin is now blue, black, silver or even gold!

Sound

The soundtracks in Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild are good, but the sound effects could have been better, luckily Link does not talk! There are some problems though, a lot of the non-playable characters use sexual innuendos, mostly the giant fairies, which is not something that belongs in a Nintendo game in my opinion.

Rating

I rate the sound and graphics of Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild with a 6.9.
The open world is just too empty, there is also not a lot of enemy variety but mostly color swaps. I am also missing epic boss fights or cut scenes!

What did I think after playing Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild?

The most annoying part of this game was the Korok seeds, we did try to find them all but after 450 Korok seeds, it got too much, and we decided to quit and play another game! Another major problem was that weapons kept on breaking! We did make some awesome meals for healing while gathering ingredients and blowing up wildlife with bombs! We also cleared every shrine and major quest line! However, the longer you play this game, the more it feels like a drag!

While the Master sword is strong, a lot of different weapons are stronger! You can also have a horse and summon it, there is also a giant horse! I think I did enjoy other Legend of Zelda games more, thus we want to play Skyward Sword in the future, it is in our backlog!

Rating

I rate Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild with a 6.5 after playing.
The game that keeps dragging you through Korok infested mud!

What are my personal thoughts about Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild?

There are too many Korok seeds for my taste!

Rating

My personal Rating of Korok collector is a 5.6.

I don’t have Nintendo so I can’t play The Legend of Zelda – Breath of the Wild. So I played Genshin Impact and it was fun. I’ll buy Nintendo one day, but it won’t be right away because I’m enjoying Genshin. haha

Good review! At first i thought you were joking with the “Collect the golden turd simulator!”, but after a quick google search this game started to stink:)). The golden poo, a good luck charm in Japan…

Thanks for sharing your honest opinions on this game. Although I have heard many good things about this game and am looking forward to playing it, I do understand that it isn’t for everyone and there are areas that could be improved, such as the story (which is surprising for a Zelda game!). I assume the continually breaking inventory is meant to encourage you to explore your surroundings and make most of the items you find and to encourage you to try different strategies and weapons? It is disappointing to hear that the open world can be too empty, as it seems to be a common problem with the genre, but sometimes it is nice to just explore and relax in games.

The weapons could have a little more durability, and it would have been better, a lot of weapons can only take a few hits!
There should be a good balance in unexplored wilderness and villages!

Great to see a review that commends it whilst being honest about the flaws in it too. The game still looks brilliant though!

I´m surprised by your review since this game has received so many compliments. Hopefully they will improve the flaws you mention in the sequels.
Anyway, I´m not a big fan of Zelda; I couldn´t push myself to finish Ocarina back in the day 😛

PS: Twilight Princess on Switch should be inevitable

I try to look objectively at the game, instead of all the reviews out there. A lot of the reviews are also paid reviews, which mean they will give a higher rating.

It looks like a good game, but I agree with the cons, hopefully in the sequel solve the problems you mention in the review, as more variety of enemies / weapons / npc or missions in order to make the world more varied and not feel so empty, and above all to develop the story more, to make it richer and deeper to give more meaning to the journey
    Nice review 🙂
