Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts review

Introduction

Today we are traveling back to the SNES era, we are going to review super ghouls and ghosts! This is a game that is known for its difficulty, is this game really that difficult? Or is it just nostalgia? All I remember is that this game was awesome back when I was young! I think I spent way too much time playing this game!

What did I think before playing Super Ghouls and Ghosts?

Not too long ago, I reviewed Chrono Trigger, it made me realize, there are way more SNES games that I want to play and review. Games from my past, this is one of the games that I know, that I have played for thousands of hours as a young gamer. Back when games did not spoon-feed you, they rather kick you into the ground and say, as bad, try again! Since there is not an official page, I am going to check out the fandom page!

The Fandom page

https://ghostsngoblins.fandom.com/wiki/Super_Ghouls_%27n_Ghosts
This page gives you all the information that you need, the story, the stages, and more information on the gameplay. The basic premise is that you are Sir Arthur, and your princess got kidnapped! There is only thing to do, take up your lance and save the princess. Don’t get hit, or you might lose your armor!

Rating

I rate Super Ghouls and Ghosts with an 8.4 before playing.
This is a very fun game, you might need to enjoy older games as the graphics are old, the controls are a bit sluggish, if you are not a fan of these mechanics, you should avoid this game!

Story

When Arthur comes to the castle to meet with the princess, they are very happy to see each other. Off course, she gets kidnapped. Princesses tend to do that a lot. Arthur is not going to stand for this and grabs his weapon, ready to save her!

Rating

I rate the story of Super Ghouls and Ghosts with a 6.4.
While the story is not perfect, it is from the SNES era, some games did not even have a story. While others, had a huge story!

Gameplay

The gameplay of Super Ghouls and Ghosts is fairly simple. As SNES games tend to be, simple does not mean that this game is easy. You need to travel through many stages without dying, this is going to take you many hours, and a lot of attempts. Swear words are going to fly through the room, hopefully not along with your controller!

You need to maneuver through the stage, two hits from monsters that do not stop respawning, and you are a goner. You have a few lives, so make sure to use them wisely. If you die, it means you need to start all the way from the beginning without any bonuses. It took me, many, and I do mean, many attempts when I was young to beat this game.

When you make your way through the ever-changing levels with platforms that disappear out of nowhere. You might also find yourself in the background. You can collect random treasure chests for new weapons. You could find knifes, or maybe even a bow and arrow. All of them have different speeds and trajectories. You might want to make sure you have the right weapon for the boss fights. Oh, don’t take too long or your time will run out!

Rating

I rate the gameplay of Super Ghouls and Ghosts with an 8.7.
While this might seem like a simple game, it is going to give you mane hours of frustration, I mean fun.

Sound and Graphics

Graphics

Now, the question of the day, do the graphics of this game hold up after 20 years or so? Yes, easily! You do need to appreciate old graphics, but they are still amazing and perfectly crafted. The graphics are no rose-goggles! I still like that if you get hit, your knight walks around in his underpants. #noshame!

Sound

The soundtracks and sound effects are so iconic, it is perfect! There is just, nothing wrong with it, they paid so much attention to it back in the day! It sets the atmosphere!

Rating

I rate the sound and graphics of Super Ghouls and Ghosts with a 9.5.
This is a very pretty looking SNES game with a lot of variety in levels, enemies, and much more! The background is even pretty to look at!

What did I think after playing Super Ghouls and Ghosts?

Where I thought, this is going to be easy. I finished this game as a kid. It was not as days as my mind made me believe. It was indeed, more frustration and yet, I kept playing! More, more, I needed to save the princess! Oh, the good old days when games were small and simple, yet so addicting!

Perhaps, one of the most inventive things in this game, is the double jump. That is one agile knight with his lance! The ever-changing landscape needs a double jump, otherwise, you are not going to survive it. There was one problem that I encountered, it was a first world problem. You can grab a ladder while jumping towards. You need to stand still before climbing a ladder!

Rating

I rate Super Ghouls and Ghosts with an 8.7 after playing!
Are you ready for some spooky fun!?

What are my personal thoughts about Super Ghouls and Ghosts?

Sweet, sweet memories, playing for days and nights, honing my skill. Only for me to get rusty when I get older. With a bit of practice, I got back where I was, but damn, all those long nights when I was a kid, pulling an all-nighter breaks me now.

Rating

My personal Rating of Super Ghouls and Ghosts is a 8.8.
Spooky scary skeletons!

Last Words

Pros

Cons

I wonder, where do all those ghouls and monsters come from? Out of the demonic realm, yeah, but, why are there so many of them? Was there a bargain sale on demons or something?

Excellent review. I love this game, it is Dark Souls before we had Dark Souls. The key to beat it is practice and patience.

If only it wasn’t so frustrating to die… I guess using an emulator would make it easier because there are ways to continue from some points instead from all the way back at start.

I’m glad you are doing more retro reviews like this one and I look forward to more of them from you! What other SNES or other games from your childhood might you review in the future?

Well, we do have a lot of SNES and other retro reviews that we want to write. We are also looking at some GameCube games, and even a few Gameboy Color games!
