Introduction

Today we are going to look at Pikuniku, a weird and strange platformer! It is also your job to explore the world, and solve many different puzzles. And the beginning of the game is already, strange. You will be scrounging through the world for answers! Can you roll, kick, jump, and whatever Piku does, through the world and save it from an evil guy that offers free money?

What did I think before playing Pikuniku?

Pikuniku is a very strange game that allows you to control some kind of red beast that can jump, kick and, fall, there is supposed to be a lot of falling! I am wondering, am I able to kick some of the citizens, and how hard would the puzzles be? I did not know much about this game yet, thus it is time to visit the Steam Page site!

The Steam Page

https://store.steampowered.com/app/572890/Pikuniku/
It seems you need to puzzle a lot to get through the small campaign that will last around 5 hours, but how will you get through that campaign? It means that you will need to show your smarts as you roll around the world! There is even a co-op mode! What is sure, is that this game is going to be absurdly strange!

Rating

I rate Pikuniku with a 7.1 before playing.
This game looks like a fun but insane platformer with many weird things that will challenge you!

Story

The story starts simple with a guy offering free money, there is no way that he would scam you, right!? Wrong! And now there is only one person that can save the day, Piku! But, the villagers are scared of him as his name has been blackened. It does not help that he destroyed their bridge. It is up to you, to show that Piku is a force of good while making sure to stop the pink scamming guy!

Rating

I rate the story of Pikuniku with a 7.2.
While it is not per se, a very strong story, it is at least, unique and, very strange!

Gameplay

This game has fairly simple mechanics, you need to solve a majority of puzzles by kicking and jumping. Or, to use keen senses to find whatever is missing this time. It might be a simple bird, or the strangest thing that you can think of! There are also characters and creatures to interact with, and you can say the weirdest things to them. But, in the end you are forced to say the correct line.

There are missions that you need to complete, most of the time, these missions are usually because you messed up somehow. Like, breaking the eggs of a giant bird and letting the babies escape. Which means that you will need to find the birds while also finding a way to fix the bridge. These things can get complicated but with some searching around, you will find what you need.

There is also currency to gather, these are needed in shops to buy new, hats. Yes, you can buy more hats, but who needs hats when you already have an amazing head? It is better to just, kick the villagers, beware, they will kick you back, but perhaps that could be needed to reach a new place!?

Rating

I rate the gameplay of Pikuniku with a 7.5
This is a very fun game i f you like to play puzzle platformer games!

Sound and Graphics

Graphics

The graphics of Pikuniku make you wonder, what were the developers using during the development cycle? LSD? Most likely, but the end result is charming, yet it can be disturbing at some times. It looks all cute and friendly but actually, it can get really dark at some times! There are also a lot of secrets to discover!

Sound

The soundtracks of Pikuniku keep you focused on the task at hand, not getting lost in this world by running after a bird. The sound effects are also fun to listen to, the bad guy does annoy me, but that gives me a good reason to kill him.

Rating

I rate the sound and graphics of Pikuniku with a 7.3.
Do you need some LSD to make a game as well?

What did I think after playing Pikuniku?

While I did enjoy the game, it is fairly short as you can clear it in one sitting. The campaign might be 4 hours if you get stuck now and then. If you were to use a guide, it would be much easier but why would you use a guide? In the beginning, I was lost all the time and thinking, where to next? Perhaps, it is best to backtrack?

I think, I liked kicking the villagers the most, I am the best, and I am coming to kick you until you get angry! Some of the characters in this game are true jerks. They won’t even help you repair things or solve a puzzle for you!

Rating

I rate Pikuniku with a 6.7 after playing.
While this game is fun, it does not have much replay value.

What are my personal thoughts about Pikuniku?

While the graphics were fun to look at, I did not really enjoy the gameplay of this game. If you are looking for a puzzle platformer then this might still be a fun game to check out!

Rating

My personal Rating of Pikuniku is a 5.5.
Well, go on little red blob, save the world from the scammer!

The world could always use more of weird, small, abstract, indie, and experimental titles, in my opinion! I’m also a big fan of both cute and creepy things, and you also had me totally sold on this game when you mentioned the ability to kick NPCs! XD

This looks really fun! I could see why the art style might deter many, but then that’s why these game reviews exist – to give us a change of heart. I’ll be picking this one up for sure!

Love the old school goofy feels of this game!
Rather bored of yet another simulator focused on pixels, and forgetting it’s trying to mimic being a game.

Tried it when it was free from Epic, did not enjoy it at all..
Although your review makes it seems great, and maybe ill try it someday again
