Introduction
Today we are going to look at a fan made game called Atomic Doom. It is a mod that will not only change the way that Doom 1 works, it will also increase the difficulty as new weapons are added. You can even throw grenades! Who does not like throwing grenades at demons? There are, many demons and the blood that rains down from the ceiling is amazing! There is no story, but we have a few neat surprises to unveil in the gameplay section of this review.
What did I think before playing Atomic Doom?
To be honest, I did not know what to expect from a modded Doom game. However, mods are usually innovative and amazing. That is why I thought, I love Doom 1! There has to be some amazing mods out there, I found two of them, Brutal Doom and Atomic Doom. Today we are going into detail on what to expect from Atomic Doom. There are going to be some neat surprises, for more information we are going to the mod page!

There is some information to unpack here, firstly, you need GZdoom to play this mod. You can easily download this, you will also need a WAD file. Just use Google and you will find what you need. It seems that the guns have been revamped, perhaps some new guns. There also appears to be a lot of gore. Which is always amazing! It is time to relive Doom 1 but with a large twist, that is, a difficulty increase with new guns. As the demons will also be using new guns!

It seems like a fun conversion for the original Doom 1! It is time to make blood and gore fly all over the place!
Gameplay
The gameplay of Atomic Doom is off course alike with the normal Doom 1 that we have reviewed. There are some big changes, next to a few secrets that have been moved. The first thing that you will most likely notice is that you can choose with what kind of weapon you can choose. The pistol is actually useful now! Hurray, no more useless gun. The SMG is very fun and accurate. Not only do the guns looked prettier, they shoot differently as well.
Your HUD will also look different, it will even show you if everyone is dead. Or if you have found every secret in a certain level. Some of the sprites are different, prettier and polished. Now comes a big surprise, you can look up and down! Oh my god! No more shotgun sniping for me. No, it is just aiming and responding in time. You can still hit enemies from far away, but it will deal less damage, depending on what weapon you use.
Next to looking up and down, you can also jump. While not extremely useful, it can come in handy to find a few secrets. Jumping away from bullets is also nice. There are new guns, even grenades and flamethrowers. These flamethrowers hurt. It also means, they will hurt the enemy a lot. There is not a lot of fuel for this gun. It is time to re-explore Doom 1, with the ability to look up and down!

I rate the gameplay of Atomic Doom with a 10.
I mean, we get to play Doom 1 again with insane improvements, the gameplay is just, superb. If you dislike higher difficulty, it might not be for you, just save, or use the autosave feature.
Sound and Graphics
Graphics
The graphics are insanely good. The pixels have been polished, the blood is flowing, new enemies have been added to kill. There is even a weird black demon like creature with a lot of health. Shoot it, or chainsaw it. Because, there is a chainsaw early in the game that you can use to rip ’em to shreds, blood, more blood! We want to see blood! Make it rain!
Sound
The soundtracks are superb, and the demons dying, it is just oddly satisfying. I mean, die demons!

I rate the sound and graphics of Atomic Doom with a 10.
I can even hear the blood dripping from the ceiling, no, video games did not make me violent. I always loved to see demons die and explode, now in an even more gorey manner!
What did I think after playing Atomic Doom?
I always love to replay Doom 1, but when I play Atomic doom, it feels fresh and new. The guns look amazing, they have been made prettier, and more useful. The new HUD took some getting used to, but after a while, I enjoyed it being on the upper part of the screen. It does not feel forced but kind of strange.
One of the amazing new features was the grenade. It took some getting used to, but used properly, the grenade can take out a hefty load of enemies. Or use the new flamethrower, whatever you like better. The shotgun is amazing and does not even need to be reloaded. There are some minor flaws like the high difficulty, due to the enemies using these new weapons as well.

There are some flaws but all in all, if you liked Doom, then you will also love Atomic Doom!
What are my personal thoughts about Atomic Doom?
I loved this game, I had so much fun with new mechanics! I even found a few loopholes with jumping, however I soon learned that fire hurts very much. Do not touch the fire! It burns your health away, see what I did there?

- Explore Doom 1 once again but with new mechanics.
- There are many new weapons to try out.
- The game looks a lot more polished, the graphics of the gun are amazing!
- Look up and down, jump, do whatever you want as long as you kill demons while doing it
- The items on the ground have new sprites.
- Look at all that blood raining down!
- Not for the faint of heart, blood is everywhere, the difficulty is also higher
- Face new enemies, demons with an axe, demons who actually know how to aim, and more!
Cons
- The bonus episode is not included.
- You will need to download some items to play this game.
- Increased difficulty is not for everyone, you can however play on a lower difficulty setting
Blood! Let it rain blood, explode them, saw them up, go mad and make it rain! We want to see blood fall down from the ceiling!

I’m always amazed by modder’s efforts to keep games alive and improve them. Some games are unplayable without them, and some (like this one) give new reasons to replay the game.
