Introduction
Today we are going to build some towns in the game of Townscaper? What will you scape with a few simple clicks? Or a very long and precise interaction with this game? There is not much to it actually, just build a town. There is no story whatsoever. You just build a town, no other character, nothing to guide, not even a tutorial, but you will build a town.
What did I think before playing Townscaper
I did not know what to expect from this game, it seemed like a fun little building game. Maybe there will be tornado’s? Some other disasters? There has to be something to keep this game entertaining while building. I had no clue what this game would bring next to building a little village. It is time to check the Steam Page!
The Steam Page
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1291340/Townscaper/
I did not know what to expect, it says this is more like a toy. What am I supposed to do with that? However, you can build the city of your dreams. There is no goal, no real gameplay, just a lot of building. What am I supposed with that? There is nothing bad going to happen? Nothing to halt my progress? No walls that will stop me? You just, click on water, and that’s it? There is only one way to find out! Time to boot up this toy!
Rating
I rate Townscaper with a 5.0 before playing.
The Steam page is not very inviting.
Gameplay
There is not much gameplay going on, you start the game without a tutorial, but it is very simple to grasp what you need to do. There is a huge pool of water. You can change that by just clicking and then land will spawn. You can guess what happens if you click next to that piece of land, another piece of land will spawn!
If you click on a piece of land, a house will spawn, you can make it bigger or smaller. This way you can make the town you want. If you do not like the basic color, there are some other colors you can pick. This way you can mishmash of colors. As for what kind of house will spawn, it depends on how you fuse them together, create a lonely house, or make one on stilts. There is not much more to this game. It needs to be your thing as it can work very zen for you. Or you get bored in thirty minutes.
Rating
I rate the gameplay of Townscaper with a 3.5.
There is just not much gameplay at all.
Sound and Graphics
Graphics
The graphics are very basic, there is also not much variety in houses. Only color swaps. There are birds, yes indeed, birds that you can look at as they either sit on a house, or fly away. That is pretty much it.
Sound
The soundtrack is quite boring, there is not much sound to begin with. The sound effects are mostly the clicks you hear when building houses.
Rating
I rate the sound and graphics of Townscaper with a 3.3.
This is way too basic, there is nothing fun about it at all.
What did I think after playing Townscaper?
This is not a game that is fun for very long. You can play it in short sessions if you need to calm down, it might make you feel relaxed. There is not much more to it. You can build houses by clicking. I wish I could say there is more to this game but there simply isn’t. It is just, click, and a house appears, not much else going on here.
Rating
I rate Townscaper with a 2.7 after playing.
This is not a very fun game.
What are my personal thoughts about Townscaper?
I created fuck with my city, I guess, that is something?
Rating
My personal Rating of Townscaper with a 1.8.
Last Words
Pros
- Click a city into existence
- There are a few colors to choose from.
- Birds, there are birds.
- This game might make you feel relaxed.
Cons
- Barely any gameplay elements
- The graphics and soundtracks are basic.
- All you need to do is click on water.
- This game might be fun for a an hour.
I don’t even know what I am actually supposed to do in this game, create a city, then what? At least it has pretty colors!

I like cuz its relax
chill game, but repetitive. good review, to the point!
It is indeed, repetitive.
Nice game! Thanks for the review.
You are welcome!
I guess it is a bit like the Minecraft feeling … get creative or get bored. But looks super relaxing.
It can be zen.
It would be even more cool to have an option where you could walk around your city in 1st person to get a better feel for it.
That would have been amazing!
Looks like you’re really not into simulator games…
You wrecked this one. :/
Wrecking things is awesome! Perhaps, I am not very creative with city games.
If anyone is interested, the developer released a demo for browser.

Really interesting. Thanks for the review!
Looks charming!
That sounds very harsh, it seems mostly like a game to just vibe to and relax. It looks beautiful at least.
It can be a bit harsh, it is extremely niche, you need to be in the perfect mindset to enjoy this game a little.
It looks cute and super chill, maybe TOO chill, nothing to look forward to after a while.
It is too chill! Its chillness is over 9000!
Art style looks pretty cool and feels like an unique game, but they could have added more content
There is barely any content.
Cute relaxing game.
nice
wow, harsh
Well, it’s like playing with old legos. You have random pieces and build what your imagination allows.
this game looks super fun
I think it’s a game you can play to relax, with no specific goal.
Everything is really well done and cute, the animation of the water or the buildings when you put them down are just really well done. Just like the little noises.
I love the little details like the clothesline or the binoculars. I would have liked there to be a bit of life, like villagers walking around and chatting, dogs playing with each other, cats walking on the roofs or even a few boats in the water!
I like it, even if I don’t know if I’ll be able to play it for long.
Relaxing with not specific goal does not work for me, lol! I do admit, there should have been more details.
This definitely seems like it’s meant to be a zen experience. Not sure if I would play this kind of game for too long, but it’s good that it exists!
Thanks for bringing this one to our attention! 🙂
