Introduction

Today we are going to look at a Duke Nukem game, why? Because we all love Duke Nukem! Today I will look at Duke Nukem Megaton3D before revamping some older Duke Nukem games. What is there to tell about this game? You shoot aliens, there will not be a story since it is not significant.

What did I think before replaying Duke Nukem Megaton 3D?

Duke Nukem Megaton 3D might be the best known Duke Nukem game out there. Almost everyone, at least the people of my generation, have played it. It was gory back then and amazing, but even after all these years, I get excited to return to Duke Nukem Megaton 3D. I mean, who doesn’t want to blow up some aliens? Time to check the Duke Nukem Page.

The first thing you might wonder is, why don’t you use the Steam page? Well, this game is no longer available on Steam unless you have the game already in your Steam library. It had to do with rights, but if you have this version it comes with the DLC, which I intend to revamp in the future as well. We all know what Duke Nukem is about, we mess around with guns while shooting at aliens, what could possibly go wrong?

Rating

I rated Duke Nukem Megaton 3D with a 9.1 before playing.
This game is pretty old, but if you like retro games, then Duke Nukem is one of the great FPS shooters from days long gone.

Gameplay

The gameplay of Duke Nukem is pretty straightforward, you go through the levels while not dying and shooting aliens. These aliens come in many sizes and shapes, big, small, but mostly just ugly. And the best thing to do with ugly aliens is shooting them to smithereens. For that, however, you need bullets which are scattered throughout the level and sporadically the aliens also drop bullets. Depending on what episode you are playing, it might be pistol clips, or ammo for a great weapon.

While you are doing your best to shoot these aliens into tiny bits, they will also do their best to blow you out of existence. Might they hit you, it is advisable to get a med kit, which are, for some odd reason, all over the place? Are you in a pinch but still hurt? Shoot the nearest fire hydrant and drink water. We all know how refreshing water can be, it just, revitalizes you.

There are four episodes and plenty of levels, including secret levels, with many aliens. These will keep you occupied for quite some time, but if you are interested in more levels, there are many fan-made levels to explore. One of them is even Doom themed! Duke Nukem Megaton 3D might be an old game, but darn tooting hell, there is still a lot of fun to be gained after this many years. Do not forget to check every nook and cranny for secrets!

Rating

I rate the gameplay of Duke Nukem Megaton 3D with a 9.8
It is almost perfect, there are a few minor things that you could be annoyed by, but all in all, this is a great game that has also aged well in the gameplay factor.

Sound and Graphics

Graphics

The graphics of Duke Nukem are old, we can all see that, but it is also an old game and back then, these graphics were a masterpiece. I still think it is funny how the sprites can flip like some kind of cardboard, now we know, in every alien, there are two card-boards, the main side, and the backside. In all seriousness, there is a remarkable detail to the graphics in this game that it even holds up in this day and age.

Sound

The music in Duke Nukem is outstanding, the enemies dying as they grab their necks and gurgle out blood is perfect. But what makes this game perfect, is the quotes from Duke Nukem, we all know and love ’em.

I rate the sound and graphics of Duke Nukem Megaton 3D with a 9.9
Why not a 10? Well, there has to be some minor room for improvement.

What did I think after playing Duke Nukem Megaton 3D?

Of course, I had a lot of fun when playing this game once again. There are so many ways I can play this game, I can just try to beat the whole game. Or perhaps I can work on going as fast as I can while ignoring most of the aliens. There are so many ways to play Duke Nukem Megaton 3D.

The guns in Duke Nukem never cease to amaze me, there is a lot of choice. The guns are neatly balanced, meaning you can kill numerous aliens with the pistol. I would, however, not recommend trying and beat the bosses with your pistol, unless you are trying to challenge yourself, which can always be fun.

I wish older Duke Nukem games were available on Steam.

I have the 20th Century World Tour Edition in my library. I hope there’s not much of a difference between editions.

Good review, by the way. I like the fragmented style of it.

While I don’t have nostalgia for Duke Nukem games, I remember this game practically putting this franchise on the map.

It’s sad that it’s not available on GOG either, fortunately you can readily find the game on Internet Archive 🙂

    Gotta love Duke’s jokes.

This one is awesome, it doesn’t matter the graphics are “old”. We get to see new games with pixelated graphics, it’s just a matter of preference.

Level designs would probably get more complex nowadays, but the simplicity is what makes it great. Just like Half-Life games.
