Introduction

Today we are going to look once more at Pikmin 1 but this time we’ll look at the remastered version of Pikmin 1 that is playable on the Nintendo Switch. Does this old classic still live up to its name? Are the graphics improved? What can you expect from this classical masterpiece that has made its comeback?

What did I think before playing Pikmin 1?

To be fair, I had no idea what to expect from the remaster. A bit of spruced up graphics perhaps, some minor improvements, not much else. I already knew no new content would be added. I was very curious as to see what the new improvements would be, I have only ever played the original version of the Gamecube. Now, let’s see what the new version has in store for us.

The Nintendo Switch page

The page is quite limited, but it is clear, we will be exploring a planet while we struggle to survive. You have thirty days to get all the ship parts, otherwise Olimar dies. I am not kidding, the main character actually dies if you mess up. So, it is best to get started and guide our little ant men, I mean Pikmin to the ship parts!

Rating

I rated Pikmin 1 remaster with an 8.8 before playing.
If you always liked Pikmin, then this might be the best bet for you!

Gameplay

The game starts fairly simple, you crash on a planet after an asteroid breaks your ship. Once you get up and running, you will soon find your first Pikmin, of course, one does not make an army. You will need to create more Pikmin and as the days pass by you will get more Pikmin, and different kinds of Pikmin.

Pikmin 1 has a lot of different enemies that you will need to defeat. These are scattered in three main areas. The final area, funnily enough called the final trial, is where the final boss resides. I have taken it upon me to complete the game in only nine days in game. I will also record this attempt. You might think, Oh, this will be easy, well, I will say again, it is not easy.

Pikmin 1 has a very high difficulty, make one mistake, and you could lose over thirty Pikmin with one enemy attack. You will need to use cunning and strategy to beat the game. If possible, without losing all of your Pikmin. Some bosses can be difficult to beat, if you want to complete the stages properly, you will need perfect planning and strategizing.

Rating

I rated the gameplay of Pikmin 1 with a 9.3
The gameplay of Pikmin 1 is brutal but amazing!

Sound and Graphics

Graphics

The remaster could have put in a lot more effort into the graphics, since it does look a bit better. But it feels more like an HD port to me. Nonetheless, I love the Bulborbs!

Sound

I have nothing to complain about the sound or the soundtracks, except that two soundtracks are removed, but this is also mentioned on the Nintendo page.

Rating

I rated the sound and graphics of Pikmin 1 with a 7.1
I had expected more of the graphics from this remaster.

What did I think after playing Pikmin 1 Remaster?

One thing that I had to adapt to was the fact that Yellow Pikmin do not drop bombs anymore when you whistle them. This allowed for some different tactics, but it also makes sacrificing them in a big bang almost impossible. Bomb rocks can no longer be used to blast enemies to smithereens in one big blow.

I rated Pikmin 1 Remaster with an 8.5 after playing

What are my personal thoughts about Pikmin 1 Remaster?

While I thoroughly enjoyed playing Pikmin 1 on the Nintendo Switch, I also know what the game was like on the Gamecube. I am mostly glad that more people can now play this game.

My personal Rating of Pikmin 1 is a 9.5

Those graphics don’t seem like an actual remaster, not even like reworked textures. At least they made in playable on switch which is positive I guess.

It sounds like they could have put more effort into the remastering of the game in terms of graphics, and I am somewhat confused by the changes they made to some of the Pikmin. Maybe they thought bombing was too violent for kids or taught them the wrong things?

It sounds really cool that you need to make a carefully planned out strategy to win the boss battles! I’m very interested in the Pikmin games but I think the price is was too high for a remaster of a really old game… A remaster where they didn’t put much work into improving the graphics…

No surprise from Nintendo. They might not have games with dope graphics, but they are so fun and with a great gameplay. I have to admit that I expected bit more from this remaster, but it’s still good.

Much better review than from other people. You’re clearly familiar with the original games whereas other reviewers just treated this like any other game.
