Introduction
Today we are going to look at a game that earned a well-deserved remake. I am talking about Advance Wars. Sadly, only the first two games have gotten a remake and not the third one from the DS. In this review, I’ll look at Advance Wars 1 Reboot. Now, without a delay, let us move forward in this review.
What did I think before playing Advance Wars 1 Re-boot?
I have to say, I was really surprised this game got a reboot at all. I remember being young and playing this on the Gameboy Advance, you know, before these handheld things had a light. Playing until late at night as I was waging war, my escape from reality. Thus, I was very eager to play this game. I knew exactly what I was stepping into, so, no need to find more information.
This game is all about waging war as effective as possible. There is a fun story, well, fun, war is never fun. But, this is make—believe and the story is good, but I will get to that. You have different maps, different opponents to fight, and plenty of units to build. Time to dig into the story!
Rating
I rated Advance Wars 1 Re-boot with a 9.1 before playing.
If this reboot is as good as the original. Then I am game!
Story
The story starts with Blue Moon invading Orange Star, a new commanding officer is appointed to take care of this problem. Little do they know conflict is all over the place, and a mysterious force is behind it all. Can Orange Star stop the invasion and stop the war?
Rating
I rate the story of Advance Wars 1 Re-boot with an 8.4
The story is excellent actually, the main story is focused on three commanding officers of the Orange Star. Max is my favorite, he likes tanks.
Gameplay
This game has numerous fun elements in which you will need to win the war by any means. Your main commanding officer is called Andy. The operations take place over a fictional world map. Selecting one of these missions will take you to a campaign that will progress the story. Once you select a mission, you will be transported to a map where the war will take place.
You will usually start with a few units, depending on the campaign mission that you have selected. On some missions, you will be able to build new units. This brings into aspect another element of the game. Capturing buildings, this can be done to increase your funds which will be given each turn. Most of the bases need to be captured.
This also brings us to one way of winning the war. In most of the campaign missions, you will see the enemy has a headquarters. If you capture it, it is an instant win. There are many vehicles, all of them have weaknesses and strengths. However, only infantry can capture buildings.
There are many other elements like powers you can use. The fog of war that makes it easy to get sniped by long-range units. You will have to fully utilize your strategic brain to win all these wars. As you progress the story, it will become much harder to win and get a good rank.

I rated the gameplay of Advance Wars 1 Re-boot with a 9.3
If you like strategy games, this game is perfect, and you can even take it with you as it is on the Switch!
Sound and Graphics
Graphics
The graphics are immensely better compared to the Gameboy Advance version. There are even some remarkable cutscenes at the beginning and end of the game! I liked how the units moved and fought with each other.
Sound
The soundtrack in this game is incredibly good. The voice acting too, but there is a slight problem. Not everything is voice acted, or just part of a sentence, this bothers me and my wife a lot.
Rating
I rated the sound and graphics of Advance Wars 1 Re-boot with a 7.7
While the graphics are amazing, the voice acting in this game has not been handled properly. It would have been butter whether it was fully voice acted, or not at all.
What did I think after playing Advance Wars 1 Re-boot?
I had wondered before playing this game if it would hit the same spot as it did so many years ago. Lucky for me, it did hit the same spot. I thoroughly enjoyed the campaign missions. Even if some are very difficult to complete, I worked on figuring out the best strategy.
Relearning how all the units work was fun to do as well. The user interface has had a few tweaks, and it works very well with planning. Checking the range of enemy units is critical, or how far they can walk.
Rating
I rated Advance Wars 1 Re-boot with a 9.4 after playing.
This game focuses solely on the Orange Stare, but the story has them clashing with other armies and even joining up.
What are my personal thoughts about Advance Wars 1 Re-boot?
I thoroughly enjoyed playing this game. In the strategy genre, this might be one of the best games. You do need to like strategy games with campaigns that can take over thirty minutes.

The gameplay feels simple but the anime style cutscenes are really appealing.
I really like the cutscenes!
Thanks for the test and for bringing back memories of the GBA!
neat visuals, i like it.
Never played the original but I’ve always loved strategy games. I knew this was a must play because I heard so much praise about the original games.
Advance Wars 1 Re-boot camp is a must play!
Not sure why this “half-or-part-of-the-conversaton” voice acting became so common. Feels weird sometimes. Lovely that you liked the Game. I enjoyed Wargroove and ‘into the breach’ from the strategy Genre.
It does feel odd and it irritates me!
Oh, yeah, the art style looks awesome!
EPIC!!!!!
Good review! Interesting game
You are welcome!
Good to see that the game remains as good as when I played it with this remake! 😀
