Introduction

Today we are going to look at the Age of Empires game. You will be building an empire while toppling others, or like me, you will mess around and spawn cheat units. This is so much more fun, I do not have enough patience to play this whole game! I used to when I was little but now, I just want the other empires to fall and see the victory screen. This is a fairly old game, but there is a remastered version. The definitive edition! There is no story in this game, just buildings. Lots of, buildings.

What did I think before playing Age of Empires 1?

To be honest, I just wanted to spawn cheat units and wreck the other bases. I think, I may have lost my patience for real time strategy games along the road. As I usually do not play these games. The slow build, the slow take-over of other empires. It just sounds, a bit dull to me. I did not know what to expect anymore, so I checked out the Steam Page!

The Steam page

https://store.steampowered.com/app/1017900/Age_of_Empires_Definitive_Edition/
It is clear that you will be building a lot, and you need to have patience! A lot of patience but luckily, this version also has an option to speed up the game! This is perfect for people like me. There is also a campaign, if you do not enjoy the free game where you can whatever you want! Build a huge empire and just defend your land until you take over the whole land! Or make an offensive team and take down the other empires as fast as you can!

Rating

I rate Age of Empires with an 8.1 before playing.
This game can be fun, depending on your taste!

Gameplay

Usually you start off in the Stone Age, with only a few people. That is no way to win a war! You need to order them to gather resources, otherwise you are literally going to get wiped off the map. Once you have some resources, you can start building things. It is not like you can build deadly units in the beginning. You need to start slow and upgrade the people to gather items, build farms and slowly develop your way through the ages.

As you gather more resources, you can start investing in the technology tree. However, every civilization has different technologies and power ups. This is to add more variety to all the civilizations. If you want an easy win, you should build a world wonder. However, you will also put a target on your back. You need to protect it for a while before you have victory.

There are a lot of different units to try out. You have civilian units, which are used for farming, hunting, all those things. You do not want your empire to starve, do you? And as you go through the ages, the prices of everything start going up. You will also have military units, it will not be a surprise what these are used for. You will need a lot of these to topple an empire! Can you become the ruling empire?

Rating

I rate the gameplay of Age of Empires 1 with an 8.9.
It is amazing, this game is so old! I should try the newer games!

Sound and Graphics

Graphics

The graphics are quite old but still fun to look at. However, it is clear the graphics have not aged very well. It might be just me, but it is quite hard to send your units somewhere. However, there is a lot of variety to all the units! The buildings look quite pretty though. Especially the world wonders.

Sound

While I like some of the sound effects, the soundtracks got quite boring in no time. Which can be tough if you have to play for a long time.

Rating

I rate the sound and graphics of Age of Empires with a 6.9.
Sadly the graphics have not aged very well.

What did I think after playing Age of Empires 1?

I mostly had fun to play this game with cheats, just messing around. The time that I had the focus for a long building an empire session have long passed. It has to be a very good game for me to actually enjoy building an empire. However, I did like it a lot when I was younger. This was one of my main time gulpers back then! I still enjoy looking at the game, nostalgia!

You have to admit, those cheats are fun! Do you want a sports car with a rocket launcher!? Off course, you do, we can even drive through the water with it. Do not ask me how, science! There are off course a lot more fun codes to use. I wonder what the idea is behind all these cheat codes that they have made for this game. Somebody just had some fun when making sprites for this game.

Rating

I rate Age of Empires with a 7.5 after playing.
My sports car is going to topple your empire!

What are my personal thoughts about Age of Empires 1?

Off course, I had fun with this game, but I just do not have the proper patience anymore for this game.

Rating

My personal Rating of Age of Empires 1 is a 5.2.
This game is not for me.

Pros

Cons

Is there anyone else that has the same problem as me, no longer the patience to play this game seriously? It took a lot from me to play one serious game, I should have recorded it.

AoE 1 was fun, but AoE 2 was my entire childhood. I remember playing the demo for ages, then finally getting the full version and just playing for months.

    “8.1 before playing”
Lol, since you’ve already played it before, your “before playing” score is irrelevant. 😀 You also gave it a high score even though you said those games are dull for you.

I think graphics have aged well, especially with the HD version. Could be just me.

I loved AOE back then and still do.. AOE 1 has aged well to be honest and Definitive edition is a great blessing.
    Great review sven!

I too have lost my patience for RTS games ages ago, though they (C&C, Warcraft 2) are some of the first games I played on my own PC.

This has always been one of the games where I wonder if I would have enjoyed it, if I had played it back in the day. I played a ton of Anno and Settlers and I think this would have fit right in. But now… I don’t see myself going back XD

Hey. I love strategies but rts genre of them is not my favorite but i loved when first ever rts was released that is Dune 2, first played on Amiga later on pc. But they can speak to me (rts) if they got unique type of gameplay and are rich in mechanics. One of older examples i could give is game “Seven Kingdoms”* which was also focusing on such aspects like agents and spying etc. or Majesty 1 where you managed kingdom and not directly units or like now more recent Distant Worlds 1-2 superb game with a little a mix but deep and cool (*btw you guys know music from this period by this Norwegian guy Bjørn Lynne? He is great, just listen theme from game “Escape From Colditz” btw i finished this finally not that many years ago, previously played on Amiga 500+ too and had to make manually all maps from game, now they are all ofc on interent, still not the easiest game to beat 🙂
Ok lets get back to the AoE 1. Game was great when released, i remember enjoying it. But i think Warcraft games for example was much better. Or “Polanie” 1-2 😀 You write you need patiance in this. usually it is about first clicking in rts and i prefer other strategies.

Man, this game brings me back! I remember mostly spending my time playing through the campaigns. I never finished any of them though, since it started to get a lot harder the further I went in… XD

Still, great game and great review too! 😀
