Cat quest Review

Introduction
What would happen if Skyrim was made with cats instead of nords? You will get this from a weird indie gem called Cat Quest. You are the dragon blood and you will need to save your sister that has been kidnapped by an evil cat that is unleashing dragons on Felingard. You are the only cat who can use the power of dragons and slay the dragons.
The game is an open-world action role-playing game. From the beginning of the game, you can reach almost all places in Felingard. There are islands in Felingard that you cannot access yet in the beginning. You will unlock skills later in the game to reach these islands.
Other places that are off-limits will be reachable when you learn a certain skill. The main quest is not very long. The true power of this game is in the many side quests you will encounter. You will also need to go exploring in caves all over Felingard.
The world is full of cats and towns named after cats or cat-related terms. Almost all items and spells will also be named related to cats. For example: Nyan lightning. You can find loot and upgrade all the loot you find. Creating a build that suits you is very easy to do in Cat Quest.

Story
The story begins with you sailing on a boat with your sister towards a country that is unknown to you. You are suddenly attacked by a white-haired cat that takes your sister and destroys your boat. You manage to grab a broken piece of the boat and float in the ocean. Spirry a guardian spirit shows up to save you and he brings you to Felingard. Spirry tells you that you need to become more powerful to save your sister. You head to the nearest town and talk to the cats to find out where the white-haired cat went too. You go to the grand catpital to seek out the king. Upon reaching the catpital you encounter a dragon. You will need to defeat the dragon before you can talk to the king. After defeating the dragon you learn that the king is cursed and can’t talk. You can save the king in a side quest if you want to help him.
The white-haired cat reveals himself and tells you his name is Drakoth. He reveals he is going to take over Felingard and you can never stop him unless you become more powerful.  You decide to get stronger and you find Kit Kat but he is under attack by a dragon! You manage to defeat the dragon and in return Kit, Kat will create armor and weapons for you.  You decide to face Drakoth in the furbidden fields with your new weapons and armor.  You learn about someone named Aelius. He is an old master, they have disappeared a very long time ago without a trace. You will need to find Drakoth’s other dragons and defeat them before he takes over Felingard. There is one problem with the next dragon is he flying above a lake. You travel to pawt city where you find people trying to learn the art of water walking. After you have assisted them in their attempts to walk on water you learn to walk on water and you are able to defeat the dragon. You quickly learn one of the other dragons is surrounded by mountains and you will need to fly to get there.  You go to Windmew city and talk with the people in Windmew city. You find a talking bush that assists you in learning how to fly. The bush learns he is a dragon and transforms back into a dragon and attacks you. After defeating the dragon you will find a gem you can use to fly. Now that you can fly you can reach Drakoth’s last dragon. You fly to the last dragon and defeat him after a lengthy battle. After the battle with the dragon, you seek out Grandpaw on one of the many islands in Felingard. You find Grandpaw who will learn you new information about Drakoth before you face him. He takes you to different ruins where you learn more information about the old masters and who they were. They made the dragon blood to fight off the dragons but the dragons just wanted peace and a safe place to live. The homeworld of the dragons had been destroyed. The bush was one of the only dragons left from that time. He had been captured and tortured so the old masters could learn to fly. Aelius is trapped in another dimension and Drakoth wants to free him. Drakoth used to be a good leader but he has lost his way since Aelius had been trapped. Why does Drakoth want you to gain more power? You decide to face Drakoth and save your sister but before you face Drakoth you need a new weapon. You find Kit Kat and he makes you the ultimate weapon to slay Drakoth. You head to frozen paw where Drakoth wants to meet you. When you reach the Frozen Paw he enters a building. You chase him inside. You learn you are inside the zero dimension and this is where Aelius is trapped. You learn the truth here, your sister has never even existed! It was all a ruse by Drakoth and Spirry so you could grow stronger. Drakoth intents on killing you in the zero dimension so that Aelius will be free.  You fight Drakoth, you want to spare his life but he keeps attacking you. You have no choice but to kill him. A portal appears and the zero dimension trap opens up. A lot of things come out of the trap including something that looked like Aelius. Drakoth did all this for Aelius, he was loyal until the end. You decide to roam the lands and help all the cats along the way.

Gameplay
In cat quest, you will need to fight enemies in real-time combat on the open world. You have Spirry who will keep holding your hand and explain every little detail. You level up as you defeat more enemies. The maximum level is unknown so far. I have reached level 104 which means level 99 is not the maximum level but this will give you a steam achievement. Enemies will also drop gold that you can use to buy spells or equipment. Killing enemies is not the most efficient way to gain levels or money. You can complete side quests in every town. This means you will need to backtrack a lot. There will be higher level quests in previous towns you have visited. There are 66 side quests! This means you will be very busy completing all the quests. You cannot accept multiple quests at once. When you accept a quest all other quests will be paused until you complete the current quest. The main quest is short but it seemed long since you will keep backtracking to level up and complete side quests. Your health points and magic points depend on the equipment you are wearing and on the current level you are.
You can find many different pieces of equipment throughout Felingard. You can equip a hat, armor and a weapon.

The weapons and armor in Cat Quest can be found and upgraded in caves spread all over Felingard. You can also try your luck at Kit Kat. You can choose the cheap normal chest or buy the expensive golden chest. You can also find golden chests in the caves. You will need to complete a quest first to gain the golden key. This means you will need to backtrack later when you have found the golden key. The caves will show you what level you need to be to complete them. This is not an exact science though. There is a level 200 cave which I completed at level 101. There are also hidden paths inside the caves. What happens to the equipment you already have when you find more? Selling is not an option in this game instead when you find armor or weapons you already have they will be leveled up. They will become stronger and if you have the patience you can make a beginner weapon useful. There are three secret items hidden in the game that give the best stats. They are not easy to obtain. Spells need to be bought in the arcane temple. You can upgrade spells with gold to a maximum level of 10. You can equip up to four spells at one time. This means you can make a useful magic build.  There are different arcane temples in Felingard, they all have a new spell for you to learn. When you need to regain mana points you will need to attack your enemy.

When you start Cat Quests a lot of the areas are already open to explore. There are certain areas that have higher level enemies these will be marked with a danger icon. There are hidden places to discover all over Felingard.
You will need to continue the main quest to learn new skills. The skills you will learn are walking on water and flying. This means you will be able to reach the islands. These hold more caves and secrets.
If you look hard enough you might even find Cathullu. The water walking skill is needed to find the golden key for the golden chests.

What did I think about cat quest?
The game attracted me with the Diablo-like gameplay and cats. I love cats (we have three cats!). The open-world gameplay mechanics were implemented well with warnings if you would enter a dangerous area.
I did think the game had too much hand-holding and markers to show where you need to go. The story was well crafted and had me intrigued. The combat system worked wonders with the building of your character.
The caves scattered all across the world map had many enemies and loot to find with hidden secrets. You could see what the level was before you entered a cave but clearing it when you are lower level is possible.
Once you have access to the trap magic, the game becomes a cakewalk. I used Berserk magic with the trap skill and destroyed everything in sight. I really enjoyed playing this game and Cat quest 2 is certainly on my to playlist!

Graphics and sound
The graphics are cartoony and work fine. I love how they added skills that make you able to walk on water. This allows you to fully grasp how much detail went into the graphics.
There are multiple soundtracks and good SFX sounds.

Pros
– The game is Skyrim in disguise with cats.
– The exploration in Cat Quest is very expanded and well crafted.
– I really enjoyed the story of Cat Quest.
– The weapon and armor upgrade system is simple but works well.
– All the cat-themed towns and items made me laugh.
– I think the Cat Quest developers did a wonderful job mixing genres together and creating this indie gem.

Cons
– Spirry keeps holding your hand and explaining you everything.
– the quest system in Cat Quest means you will need to backtrack a lot.
– The caves are fun but they re-use many of the same tilesets.

I really enjoyed playing through Cat Quest. I have explored all the caves and completed all the quests.
