Chrono Trigger Devolution review

Introduction

Once again we will be looking at a Chrono Trigger game, this time we are going to look at Chrono Trigger devolution. This is mostly a romhack that will adjust the story, as all text in the game has been altered, but the gameplay, and graphics, are the same. Putting me in quite a pickle. Since I have already reviewed Chrono Trigger once and I gave it a perfect rating. If everything is the same, except for the story, then how do I go about making this review? That is a tricky question. The gameplay and graphics section will be copies from the old review, and for the other part, I will type new thingies, yay go thingies!

What did I think before playing Chrono Trigger Devolution

Chrono Trigger Devolution is for the people who have played through the game a million times already and like to spruce up the story. Since that is all this romhack changes. I expected the same old game, but with a new layer. There is not much else to talk about, so, let us go check out the romhack page!

The Romhack page

If you are unsure how to apply a romhack, there is a file with everything you need. All this romhack does, is change the text. Instead of going to save the world, you will be taking it over. I get this is a huge time sink, having to go through every line of dialogue.

Rating

I rated Chrono Trigger Devolution with a 8.9 before playing.
Time for some more Chrono Trigger!

Story

The story is very different, Lucca is now building the time machine to take over the world. And when Marle disappears, you need to chase her to take her hostage. And when Lavos is seen, the idea is to kill it, so they can take over the world.

Rating

I rate the story of Chrono Trigger Devolution with a 7.7
While I like the dry humor, it is just the same old joke over and over. It is fun if you are quite used to the normal story.

Gameplay

The gameplay of Chrono Trigger is a masterpiece. There are many eras to explore and while doing so, you will encounter many enemies. This is a turn-based combat game, unless you activate real-time mode. If you play turn based, you can slowly make your choices while thinking of the perfect strategy. Every character has their own element, hitting an enemy with a magic spell will heal them if they have the same affinity.

While you make your way through the game, you will find many pieces of equipment and armor to enhance your stats. If you want the ultimate weapons and armor pieces, you are going to need to complete long side quests by traveling through many eras. After you think that you’re ready to beat up the alien, there are even multiple ways to reach him. Depending on how you do, changes your ending.

All characters have different special attacks, these can even be combined with each other for double attacks and triple attacks. These are costly but most of the time very effective. Can you master the magic in this realm and save the future from an alien attack? What will your fate be in this grand tale?

Rating

I rate the Chrono Trigger with a 10.
This was a revolutionary game for its time, it is still one of the best role playing games ever made!

Sound and Graphics

Graphics

The graphics of Chrono trigger have aged very well, it is barely noticeable that the game is almost as old as me, which is, old. There are many sprites, graphical awesomeness and more! The cutscenes are also perfect! This game, just, has it all.

Sound

What is there not to love about the music in this game? It is simply, perfect along with the sound effects. There is no improving upon this!

I rate the sound and graphics of Chrono Trigger with a 10
Are you ready for your ears to explode from lovely music?

What did I think after playing Chrono Trigger Devolution

My wife and I played this game together, and we quickly learned that this game is mostly the same as the original game, but the comedy inserted can fall flat, or it will let you laugh. However, the jokes soon become old and make the whole game one big joke. This is supposed to be funny and it does so pretty good, but maybe it is fun if you have never played Chrono Trigger before.

I do tip my hat to whoever made this romhack, the amount of text you had to change, oh my god, the hours of work. Just to make some people laugh. I don’t think I would have the patience to change everything!

Rating

I rate Chrono Trigger Devolution with a 7.1 after playing.
Rule the world instead of saving it!

What are my personal thoughts Chrono Trigger Devolution

While this game was fun, it fell flat on our ears, and we soon passed on to other games.

Rating

My personal Rating of Chrono Trigger Devolution is a 5.5.
I had hoped for more diversity.

This is definitely my cup of tea. As for the cons, I don’t worry too much about the humor of a game as much as the gameplay. And even though it might get a little stale and repetitive, I think I can enjoy it until I finish it. Going to put this one on my list.

This looks like a cool game! The pixel graphics are very nice and colourful, and I love games with lots of secrets, details and paths to choose! I don’t think I would like to play an evil version of it but I appreciate the work that went into it!

I don’t mind humorous romhacks, but I do prefer hacks that have more significant changes to the original game. Might you try more romhacks in the future and be open to suggestions for them? There are many wonderful Pokemon romhacks, for example.

Chrono Trigger is a great JRPG, a cult classic in the genre. But I don’t think I will ever play this romhack. Maybe it will interest some peoples, in which case, good for them. But I’m not one of them.

    I don’t think I ever played a ROM hack…

I like it that you didn’t spoil the “changed” story, but apart from the jokes, are there any bigger deviations from the original? Is it worthwhile to play this one or the original one still stands true?

The final rating still holds it high, even though your personal rating was mediocre.
