Introduction

Today we are going to shoot up some 2D monsters in an old but classic game. Doom 64. It is your goal to shoot them demons into pieces! Who else can do it but the super marine that somehow seems unkillable? Collect new and old weapons as once again, the demons are back to haunt your memories! This review will not have a story section as it is actually just, shoot the hell out of the demons!

What did I think before playing Doom 64?

It is always fun to come back to Doom games, shooting up some demons! Who does not like that? It has been a while since I have played Doom 64, but I do have fond memories of playing this game. I do not remember clearly if this game had a save mode back then, I believe it worked with passwords. It is time to check out the Steam page for more information!

The Steam page

There is not a lot of information on the Steam page, it is clear that this game is a port, the 64 at the end of the name might be a dead giveaway for that though. All you need to know, is that you will be hunting demons in over 30 levels. It should be obvious that Doom has a lot of gore and violence, we want to see those demons explode! There seem to be a lot of different weapons and enemies!

Rating

I rate Doom 64 with a 7.5 before playing.
What is the most important thing about this game? That is right, destroying the demons!

Gameplay

The gameplay of Doom 64 is a classic formula that should be pretty well known by now! You start with a simple stupid gun that cant do shit to demons. However, before you know it, you will have an epic chainsaw that can not only rip demons to shreds, it will even stun lock them into infinity, just, make sure there are no other demons surrounding you! It is time for a demon chainsaw massacre!

It is going to be hard to navigate through the levels, there is no map for you to see where you are going, there is also no jumping. Which means, you will need to find several key cards to get through the levels by luck. Most of them are hidden very well. It is usually something dumb that you have overlooked. Mash that activate button, perhaps, you might even find a secret!

As Doom 64 is one of the older games, there is a major limitation, it might annoy you if you are not used to old games that have these limitations, you cannot look up and down. For me, it does not bother me as it is just a part of the game. Git gud, or the demons will eat you alive!

Rating

I rate the gameplay of Doom 64 with an 8.1.
It is very simple, shoot them demons and don’t die!

Sound and Graphics

Graphics

While I do enjoy the graphics of Doom 64, the 2D sprites are amazing! There is one thing that I am missing in this game and that is a clear indicator of where I need to go. The levels are extremely confusing! Some are even more confusing but who knows, you might even stumble into a secret area which will grant you even more armor or health or perhaps an awesome gun!

Sound

This is a Doom game, what do you think? While the soundtracks and sound effects are old, it is, amazing and keeps you on your toes to destroy those demons!

Rating

I rate the sound and graphics of Doom 64 with an 8.7.
If anything is epic, it is the music in this game!

What did I think after playing Doom 64

If there is anything that I enjoy, it is Doom, it is always fun to kill those demons, no matter if they are flat, or not. As long as they explode and die, it is good enough for me. There are a lot of weapons to find, and many secret areas. I do have to admit, the shotgun and the chainsaw are my favorite weapons!

If you get lost, you are going to get lost good, where did that key card go again? I have no clue either, it is time to wander around aimlessly while mashing the activate button! And that is when you find an epic weapon with no demons around until you find the key card and the right path! Or, you might wander around for twenty more minutes.

Rating

I rate Doom 64 with a 7.7 after playing.
Time to git gud and play on watch me die, how long can you survive!?

What are my personal thoughts about Doom 64!

There is not much to say about this game, I love it, it is simple, mind-numbing demon killing fun!

Rating

My personal Rating of Doom 64 is a 6.4, no just kidding, it is a 7.8.
Come on, that joke was amazing!

Last Words

Pros

Cons

This is one of the classic doom games, it is your job, to kill all the demons, one man, versus an army!

So many good memories with this game, its kinda hilarious that we cannot imagine a shooter where you cannot move your mouse these days.

I got this on my backlog, having played the Doom I now.

It sounds weird for an N64 game not to have up-down camera movement, though…
