Introduction

Today we will be raising hell on earth. as we are going to look at Doom Eternal, can we beat up some demons? Or rather, rip them to shreds. As you will be mostly killing them with melee attack, that are called glory strikes. Since these will heal you, who needs bullets anyway, when you have a chainsaw? It is time for a Texan demon massacre! Is the impossible marine ready for another adventure to save earth!?

What did I think before playing Doom Eternal?

While Doom may seem like yet another simple first-person shooter, it does add some flavor with weapon mods that will change how your weapon works. There are also acrobatic moves as you make your way through the demon infested streets. There are a lot more gameplay mechanics, but I had hoped for another experience like the previous renewed Doom game. For more information, I am visiting the Steam Page!

The Steam Page

The Steam Page is not very expansive, but there is enough information to realize, you will be going in insane speeds through demons. As you will be smashing them, glory killing them and even shooting them, sometimes. This is a very fast-paced first-person shooter game, while the older games can be calculated safely, this one will have you on your toes constantly as you look for another demon to chainsaw into pieces.

Rating

I rate Doom Eternal with a 7.7 before playing.
Time to roast some demons!

Story

The story takes place sometime after the Doom game that came out in 2016. The slayer returns to earth, only to find out it has been overrun by demons. There is only thing to do about that, find the perpetrator, and slaughter them all! His first objective is to take out the hell priests that are converting earth!

Rating

I rate the story of Doom Eternal with a 6.5.
While I did enjoy the story, you are playing this game for killing demons, not the people that are talking.

Gameplay

The main goal is off course to slay as many demons as possible, but what I did notice, is that there is a larger variety of demons that you will encounter compared to the previous game. This means that you will need to learn new strategies to take them down. There is also a meat hook that you can use to pull yourself to enemies.

In the beginning you will have many guns, this also means that your ammo will run out very quickly, especially if you are going to use the mods for weapons, like the missile tracker or the auto shotgun. Ammo is very scarce but that is where the chainsaw comes in. Every time that you chainsaw an enemy, you will regain all your ammo! This means that you will be combining shooting, and chainsawing demons, later on, your combos will increase as you unlock the flamethrower and more weapons.

There is a minor hub where there are also challenges that you can complete for bonus items. As for health, there is quite a lot of that available but every time that you use the glory kill skill, your health will be immensely restored. As wall climbing, bar swinging and other movement mechanics have also been introduced, your gameplay sessions are going to be very hectic!

Rating

I rate the gameplay of Doom Eternal with an 8.3.
It is time for a demon massacre!

Sound and Graphics

Graphics

The graphics of Doom Eternal are very good, at some moments it almost looks cinematic. However, in the gameplay, you might notice a few small clippings but most of them have been smoothed out. The demons explode in gory rain, which is always lovely! There is also a huge variety of demons to slay, the new weapons look good as well! Just, blow up some demons and look at the blood rain down!

Sound

The soundtracks are amazing and upbeat, you barely notice the sound effects as you are making your way through the hordes of demon! The best sound effect does have to be the chainsaw though! Time to rip you to shreds!

Rating

I rate the sound and graphics of Doom Eternal with an 8.6.
If this game has something, it is pretty demons that die in a gory way!

What did I think after Doom Eternal?

While I liked the Doom game of 2016 a lot, I did enjoy this game less, it seems more like Doom 1,5, as if they just wanted to go on with the story and add a few new shiny trinkets. While this is not bad per se, it just feels as if I am missing, something. That spark that makes you want to play this game even more!

The weapon mods are a neat idea, it gives you a lot of variety while killing the demons but for me, the glory kills make this more a combat oriented experience as shooting the demons is bad, killing them with a glory kill is good. Which means that you will be coming close to the enemies most of the time. While this is a shooting game.

Rating

I rate Doom Eternal with a 7.3 after playing.
This is more a melee game, or perhaps a rhythm game, instead of a first person shooter game.

What are my personal thoughts about Doom Eternal

While I did have fun when blowing up the demons, it just felt, off to me. This whole game feels as if you are a demon slayer running around on roids kicking and slashing your demons instead of using guns. Which, feels odd to me, I have to admit, the chainsaw is awesome.

Rating

My personal Rating of Doom Eternal is a 6.7.
Marine on roids chainsaws another demon!

I’m a little surprised you were OK on the story, from what I hear unlike the first game which lampshaded video game narration a bit, this one really, really wants you to take it seriously. It’s releaving to hear you weren’t turned off by the juggling, too!

Although very different from other entries in the series, this game still sounds like good, cathartic fun. Although, I think I would still prefer the Doom games of old, especially if I’m looking for something slightly less hectic.

Always wanted to play Doom Eternal but never got the chance and the download size is so huge that I couldn’t waste my subscription to download it through GP.

I really do hope I get to play it someday.. it is truly amazing!

My understanding was that Doom Eternal was more different than the 2016 Doom than you think. Sounds like I should take that with a grain of salt.
