Introduction

This time we are going to review a game we have reviewed once before, do I still agree with what I said about that game a few years back? Did my personal opinion change or even my opinion about the game itself? Evoland has been reviewed before, as one of the first reviews on this website. Now, with new knowledge, I am going to dive into this game once again. Time to take a ride into the past.

What did I think before replaying Evoland?

It has been quite some time since I played this game and I remember the graphics being strange but never really digging too deep into it. This time, I am going to dig deeper into the graphics and soundtracks. My writing has hopefully increased, because otherwise I have been doing something the last three years. Not only that, the reviews look much more slick and clean. Since it has been like, three years I wanted to check the Steam page for more information, to see if what I remember is correct, you should guess, but I go through a lot of games.

The Steam page

This edition contains both games, I have yet to finish Evoland 2, it might be a good idea to continue that game after finishing that review! This game is a true role-playing game, however, it is not to be taken too seriously. As you travel through the game, the graphics will evolve. As in, you start with no color or sound. As you continue through the story you will find more ways to upgrade the graphics!

Rating

I rate Evoland with an 8.4 before playing.
If you are looking for a role-playing game with humor, this might be the perfect game for you! Time to have some fun and see the graphics evolve!

Story

Instead of looking at the real story, we are going to the true meat of this game. It is all about experiencing the graphics evolution that has happened over the years. Starting from no color, to much better graphics. This is what the is about, and it’s story too. Alongside the, what should be the main story is mostly just the subplot.

Rating

I rate the story of Evoland with an 8.1.
This might be a good game for some younger people, to see what we millennials had to play with back in the day. Then I can say, for us this was normal, just like older people say top me ping pong on the Commodore 64 was normal

Gameplay

This game has many genres and takes the prime elements from them to show you what different kind of systems there are. It starts out very simple, with a map where you can poke some monsters. It will not take long for you to collect the first basic upgrades that will help you move freely. Then you can get around a bit more, then you will be able to go to the over world map where turn based battles will be unlocked.

From that point on, the graphics will gradually get better, but it reminds me mostly of an old school game. Until you get to the action role-playing game section. That one is very fun! There are also dungeons in which you will need to solve puzzles. You should try hugging the wall for secrets. It might also be a good idea to interact with all items, who knows what kind of easter eggs you will find?

Along the normal graphic upgrade story, there is a card mini-game, which is why you need to hug walls. Some of them are hidden in the walls. You can also buy cards in the shop with glis. Next to that, you have stars that you can collect. These usually involve backtracking after getting 3D graphics, or new skills. When you unlock the airship, that is the point in the game you can do most of the things you could not do before. Go out there and get graphically involved!

Rating

I rate the gameplay of Evoland with an 9.0
This game has so many genres jammed into, and somehow it works. If you like Final Fantasy or Legend of Zelda, you will be right at home with this game.

Sound and Graphics

Graphics

The amount of work the developers had to put into this game is insane. Having this many different graphics styles in this game, along with all those different HUDS. I have to applaud them and take off my hat, because, I am impressed. It is enjoyable, true to the graphic evolution, and it even manages to deliver a good role playing game while showing you how graphics have changed over the years.

Sound

There is only one thing I can say, the first few minutes of the game suck, there is no sound at all! Until you open the chest that will give you music, then it starts to rock with many different sound effects, and sound tracks!

Rating

I rate the sound and graphics of Evoland with a 9.5
Just, amazing!

What did I think after replaying Evoland?

It had been quite some years since I had played this game, and to be honest, it is just as I had expected it to be. A fun adventure that shows you that graphics both matter, and don’t matter at the same time to give you a fun game that even has a fun story with a load of easter eggs.

If you like finding things in games, this might be a perfect game for you. There are many Final Fantasy references, even some Legend of Zelda jokes. Also, the humor in this game is just as I remember, fun and idiotic. Just great to enjoy a fun story that does not take itself serious at all, it is still hard to find all the hidden stars. It is best to wait for the airship!

Rating

I rate Evoland with an 8.7 after playing.
This is still a fun game!

What are my personal thoughts about Evoland?

There is so much to unpack in this game, mostly the funny jokes, like the one with no branching option. Man, I had to call my character My Dude!

Rating

My personal Rating of Evoland is 8.9
I thoroughly enjoyed going through this game again!

It’s a good thing this pack contains both games, while Evoland 1 was interesting I think the second was where they really shined through. Even if you just thought the first was at best OK it’s worth it to jump into the second.

  2. DonCarlos

Wow! I have to say this is an original, great idea, for a game. I wish developers would do more games like this more often.

    It’s a mash-up of lots of more-known RPGs.

I loved the 2D parts more than the 3D – they looked more eye-pleasing. It’s like comparing old, hand-drawn cartoons, with the new, digital cartoons. I’ll always pick the old one over the new one.
