Ice Age Scrat’s Nutty Adventure review

Introduction

We are going to look at a game from a popular franchise, Ice Age! This is a rather low budget game, but despite that, we wanted to see what this game would hold for us! You take the role of Scrat, and off course it is your goal to collect acorns, not just any acorns but crystal acorns! What these will do, we will feature that in the gameplay section! Scrat always has bad luck, can you overcome his bad luck and defeat the bosses to get the acorns?

What did I think before playing Ice Age Scrat's Nutty Adventure?

Ice Age Scrat’s Nutty Adventure is a 3D platformer game where you will need to solve puzzles, battle enemies, collect crystals and find collectibles! I did not know what else to expect from this game, since it was on PlayStation pass, we decided to give it a whirl. What could possible go wrong when you try to grab an acorn? We went to the Steam page for more information!

The Steam Page!

The Steam page does not hold a lot of information, but we learned that we would jump and puzzle our way through iconic Ice Age locations. It mentioned something about Ice Age friends, would we get to see characters like Sid as well? There was only one way of finding out! It also seemed that you can unlock new abilities by gathering crystal acorns! I was curious as to what the abilities would be!

Rating

I rate Ice Age Scrat’s Nutty Adventure with a 7.4 before playing.
This seemed like a fun game, Scrat is an amazing character in the Ice Age franchise!

Story

The story is fairly simple, Scrat finds a temple, but the crystal acorns are missing. You need to guide him on an epic quest to retrieve them!

Rating

I rate the story of Ice Age Scrat’s Nutty Adventure with a 4.5
There is no dialogue in this game, only a few tutorial text bubbles. The ending also is short and abrupt, it makes no sense whatsoever. There are no other Ice Age characters, except some statues of them.

Gameplay

The gameplay is fairly simple, you start without abilities, and you need to explore one of the four worlds for the first acorn. The puzzles include giving power to doors with acorn shaped generators, or even throwing stones on markings. Each level has tablets to collect along with statues, but except for looking at them, it does nothing for you. The battle system looks very rough with wonky hit boxes. Most of the enemies can be ignored as they mostly drop crystals.

You start with only a small amount of health, not that it matters as dying has no penalty and checkpoints are everywhere. Despite that, if you want to upgrade your health, you need to collect 5k crystals to obtain the max amount of health. If you pick them up along the way, you will have reached this amount before hitting the boss of world 2. If you want all the collectibles, you might need all three new abilities, even though there are four crystal acorns.

This brings us to a big problem, the fourth crystal acorn does not even give a skill. It might have given the ability to easily locate collectibles or even just easy fast travel instead of having to finish a level. At certain points in levels you cannot go back, this means that you will need to complete the same level multiple times for all collectibles.

Rating

I rate the gameplay Ice Age Scrat’s Nutty Adventure with a 5.5
There are many bugs in this game, spots that you will through, walls that can be walked through, clipping, and there are zero other characters from the franchise. There is not even a real final boss! A lot of the gameplay elements are broken or way too simplified, if you have a kid, this might be a fun 3D platformer since death has no penalty!

Sound and Graphics

Graphics

The graphics are low budget with a lot of copy and paste materials, bugs everywhere, clipping issues, weird animations, not to mention the odd ending with nobody even talking.  If you went into this game expecting a full blow cast, you will find yourself disappointed.

Sound

The music is stale along with very odd sound effects. Add the fact that no one is talking in this game, it just feels off. The music also stutters at time, and most of the sound effects are just weird.

I rate the sound and graphics of Ice Age Scrat’s Nutty Adventure with a 5.2
I was looking forward to seeing other members of the Ice Age cast, sadly this is a very low budget game!

What did I think after playing Ice Age Scrat's Nutty Adventure?

While my wife and I did have fun when playing this game, since we do like Scrat a lot, there are just too many big problems in this game. It is also odd how there is no penalty to death, how bad would it be if you lost a few crystals for dying? They even respawn later, thus it would not be a big deal.

We encountered many glitches, most of them involved walking through walls. My biggest gripe with this game was, however, that levels had no return points. Meaning if you missed a collectible you would need to play it again all the way from the beginning! This got annoying real quick when gathering the collectibles that for some odd reason do nothing!

Rating

I rate Ice Age Scrat’s Nutty Adventure with a 5.4 after playing.
The bugs got really annoying at some point in the game, as you came near the end, it seemed as if they had rushed the game and scrapped many things, including a final boss fight.

What are my personal thoughts about Ice Age Scrat's Nutty Adventure

While we did have fun, we were mostly laughing about the horrible state that this game is in. It is rushed, extremely low budget and I would be amazed if it even had beta testers!

Rating

My personal Rating of Ice Age Scrat’s Nutty Adventure is a 6.
This is an entertaining game, however collecting all items could have been made easier.

Last Words

Pros

Cons

Despite Scrat being in this game, you should only buy it when it is on sale. Otherwise, you might regret it, however if you have kids, this might be a great game for them!
