Legends of Idleon early access review

Introduction

Today we are going to check out an idle game, we have not really reviewed one of these yet, so, we have two of them planned, what could the other idle game be? Today we are going to look into Legend of Idleon MMORPG. While this game does have the MMORPG tag, it was quite clear it did not involve any trading with other players and party’s would only be for dungeons. Nonetheless, we are going to dive into this game! For simplification reasons, in the remainder of the review, I am going to call it Legends of Idleon.

What did I think before playing Legends of Idleon?

As my wife and I were looking for a game that we had not played yet, we found a genre we did not really invest time into yet, the idle genre. So, we started looking around and found this game on Steam! It looked quite fun, your characters doing the work while you are gone? What could possible go wrong? For more information, we went to the Steam Page!

The Steam Page

The first thing what we noticed is that this game is in early access, only four out of eight world are available at this moment. It seemed that we were also going to have to complete many different quests while visiting different locations and worlds. This is a game made by one person, I tried to get in contact with him but alas no dice this time. It seemed you need to make more characters, all of them could be a different class!

Rating

I rate Legends of Idleon with an 8.6 before playing.
This game looks amazing at first sight, a good trailer, a good steam page, good reviews, and honesty straight up about the development team.

Story

The story starts with you as an ultra-strong character heading for the final boss, which is a space troll. When you reach him, he points at a hole with treasures. When you jump in, it seemed he has trolled you. Now you are back at level 1, time to re-grind to beat his troll as to pulp!

Rating

I rate the story of Legends of Idleon with a 5.0.
While it is a good set up, the rest of the story goes downhill quickly, you can even rush to the boss of the world and just kill it to get to the next world.

Gameplay

There are too many gameplay mechanics in Legends of Idleon to mention, so I am going to mention the important things in this game. Your goal in this game is to make multiple characters, all of them will have different classes, each of these classes are better at different skills. Your mage is perfect for wood chopping, your warrior will be able to mine, your archer will be good at smithing or bug catching and so on. There is even a secret class that specialized in gathering the best loot!

All of these characters need to get leveled up by grinding enemies, you will need all items, but there is never enough storage to hold all your items. You can buy more storage with real money or farm gems in game. These items from all different classes are needed to make better equipment. The farther you get in the game, the more you will need to grind or leave your character to grind. There is a special screen on which you can see how much A.F.K gains you will receive per hour.

When you complete one world, you can access the next one with all characters, each world holds new skills for you to learn. As you level up your classes, they will become better in new skills as they gain specialized classed, this comes with a new skill tree. It is going to be hard to get to the elite classes as they are in the last world at this moment. A lot of the buffs are for each character. There are a boat load of skills to master, party dungeons to play, mini-games and a lot more!

Rating

I rate the gameplay of Legends of Idleon with an 8.5.
There is a boat load to do, just don’t go to world 4 (explanation found later in the review)

Sound and Graphics

Graphics

The graphics are a mixed bag. While the graphics and items are fun, they are not wonderful per se, as your main character is just a stick figure. There are not many different weapons, there are however a lot of enemies. Most of them, like the rest of the game, is based on Maplestory. Even the log-in screen, the inventory, even the skill tree. It is just a tad different, but it is a complete rip-off.

Sound

The music reminds me too much of Maplestory, a few of the notes are just slightly different. There is no voice acting, but the non-playable characters say the stupidest thing.

Rating

I rate the sound and graphics of Legend of Idleon with a 2.6.
This game is just a complete rip-off from another game, while it is fun to look at, I just can’t give it a high rating if it is just ripped off.

What did I think after playing Legends of Idleon?

While we did have a lot of fun, letting the other characters grind, doing skills, party dungeons, increasing our damage. It all ended when we reached world 4, more on that later. We enjoyed the party dungeons a lot, it gave insane buffs to normal gameplay, it was balanced, the party system sucked tough. There was also a Colosseum, which was also fun. There were also a lot of pay to win elements in my opinion, want a better smithy? Pay up, want a bigger bag? Pay up! Want more dungeon runs per week? Pay up! Want more storage? Pay up! Want more card slots, which are essential for every part of the game? Pay up! There are more examples, but you get the point.

In every world, you will get a new town skill, these will go automatically while you are playing, smithing for world 1, alchemy for world 2, and construction for world 3. There are classes that make these skills better. But you learn that you don’t have to pay too much attention to these skills. Then, you come into world 4, to even use the town skill, you need to leave all your characters there. This completely ruined the game for me and my wife.

Rating

I rate Legends of Idleon with a 2.1 after playing.
The idea behind this is just ridiculous, why would you change the formula if it worked so good in the previous worlds? If people don’t want to manage their characters, they are just going to let them do something for a week before checking in! It is better to let people choose than to make the choice for them! I wanted to talk to the developer about this decision, but my request for a chat did not even get answered.

What are my personal thoughts about Legends of Idleon?

World 4 completely ruined my experience with this game! I wish I never had unlocked it!

Rating

My personal Rating of Legends of Idleon is 5.0.
World 4 ruined all the fun, there should have been more thought put into making world 4.

Last Words

Pros

Cons

While this was a fun game, it went downhill quickly! Just, don’t go to world three or four too fast if you want to prolong the fun in this game.

5.4/10

Looks like a cool game with many different kinds of content, sad that it seems to have been ruined by weird mechanics and too many p2p features! It’s free though so I may try it at least for the beginning part which sounds fun 🙂
