Introduction

Metroid Dread was a great success, but this time we will be reviewing the game where most of the mechanics originated from. Samus Returns, this game is only playable on the 3DS. This game is a remake and tried a lot of different things to make Samus returns fun. A lot of mechanics were fine-tuned and added to Metroid Dread! Luckily, they discarded one of the mechanics in Metroid Dread, which involved slowing the enemies and re-adding the speed booster! We did have to deal with this in Samus Returns

What did I think before playing Metroid Samus Returns?

I was very excited to play another Metroid game, I played the original Metroid 2 a long time ago. I also reviewed the fan-made Another Metroid 2 Remake! This time we will be looking at the original remake made by Nintendo. We are going to save the baby! What are the new mechanics introduced into this game? Many of which you have seen in the Metroid Dread review, like the parry mechanic! For more information, we visited the Nintendo Page!

The Nintendo Page

The information on the Nintendo page gets your spine tingling, that is, if you like Metroid! New powerful abilities have been added, this is the Aeion mechanic. I was very excited to see how the Aeion worked in this game. Time to hunt down some secrets and of course Metroids!

Rating

I rate Metroid Samus Return with an 8.8 before playing.
I was very excited to start playing this game to see where the mechanics began that have been fine-tuned in Metroid!

Story

The story is quite simple, Samus is sent to destroy the Metroids after the Galactic Federation has decided they are a huge threat to the galaxy.

Something tells me, they should have left them alone, who knows what is hiding on that planet as well!

Rating

I rate the story of Samus Returns with a 6.3
The story is quite weak in Samus Returns, but who cares? You get to destroy some nasty Metroids that want to suck the life out of you!

Gameplay

The general gameplay of Metroid returns remain generally the same, you run around and shoot stuff and also hope that you are not the one dying in this process. Well, that is the basic premise, you will need to find all the metroids and kill them to unlock new areas. Every new area has new abilities for you to collect, many of these abilities allow you to backtrack and collect upgrades for more missiles, energy tanks and more!

The new abilities that are introduced in Samus Returns are amazing but also not so amazing. One of them is the parry ability, which is incredible useful to gather some health when you run low on energy.  Most of the bosses can also be parried, this ability is also available in Metroid Dread.

One ability that did not make it in this iteration of Metroid is the speed booster, however the new Aeion mechanics try to take care of this with a new ability called Phase Drift. When using this ability,  time will slow which allows you to walk over pitfall blocks. If you ever had any trouble gathering items, the pulse radar will help you with that! There is also an offensive and defensive Aeion ability!

Rating

I rate the gameplay of Samus Returns with a 9.1
Even though many new things have been tried out in this game, and not all of them panned out correctly, but the gameplay is still amazing!

Sound and Graphics

Graphics

The new graphics in Metroid 2 are amazing! When you think about it, the graphics used to be black and white, and now it actually has color! The graphics pushed the 3DS system to the max. The Nintendo Switch has a lot more power, which resulted in the stunning graphics of Metroid Dread.

Sound

The soundtracks are amazing as are the sound effects! The Metroids make creepy sounds! I can’t stop hearing * The Baby* for some reason.

Rating

I rate the sound and graphics of Samus Returns with a 9.0
The graphics are not as good as in Metroid Dread, but this game did give the developers the experience to create Metroid Dread a reality!

What did I think after playing Samus Returns?

I liked many of the new abilities, for example the parry system. The parry system also works great for boss fights, like using it on the Queen Metroid will give you an opportunity for a powerful attack! You do need fast reflexes, though! Otherwise, you are going to miss the small parry window.  I also liked the lightning armor to reduce incoming damage, it gives you a safety net for new boss battles!

If you have fun playing Metroidvania games, this is a must-play! The new abilities are amazing, did you know that you can now hold both beams? You can use the touch screen to quickly switch between beams! You had to either use the spazer or plasma beam in the original!

Rating

I rate Samus Returns with an 8.2 after playing.
Even though the original Metroid 2 was one of the weakest Metroid games, this remake tries to iron out those flaws.

What are my personal thoughts about Samus Returns?

I had a great time during my playtime of Samus Returns, the bosses were amazing, the diggernaut is a great boss fight! I even collected 100% in this game, however I did miss the speed booster in this game. Furthermore, I want to shinespark!

Rating

My personal Rating of Samus Returns is a 7.8
I enjoyed Metroid Dread a lot more, but that game could not exist without this game!

lol is there any review where you’re not excited to play the game in the “What did I think before playing Metroid Samus Returns?” part?

Well, I am a gamer of heart, most games and requested games that I play excite me, it is what drives me to keep on gaming!
As you can see, after gaming, that excitement was either for naught, or it was indeed an amazing game!
If I am not excited about a game, it tends to go lower on the list of to do reviews, but eventually they will turn up!
