Initial thoughts
When Sea of Stars was shown in a Nintendo Direct, my wife was immediately excited about it. We ended up playing it on Xbox, and to our surprise, this was an RPG that actually featured co-op! Simone took on the first player role, and I joined as the second player, making this adventure feel even more engaging. The moment we started, we knew we were in for something special—a game that not only pays homage to classic RPGs like Chrono Trigger but builds upon their legacy with fresh mechanics and incredible storytelling.
Story and setting
Plot overview
Sea of Stars tells the story of two Children of the Solstice, Zale and Valere, warriors chosen to harness the power of the sun and moon to combat the looming threat of the Fleshmancer. Their journey takes them across breathtaking landscapes, through ancient ruins, and into heart-wrenching encounters with foes and allies alike.
World building and immersion
The world is rich with lore, mystery, and hidden secrets. Each area feels handcrafted, full of vibrant life and intricate details. Whether exploring a bustling port town, trekking through a mystical temple, or sailing across vast oceans, the sense of adventure never fades.
Character development
The cast of Sea of Stars is among the strongest in any RPG. Every character has a distinct personality and role to play in the grand story. But the true standout? Garl. Garl is the glue that holds the team together, a beacon of optimism, and the kind of friend you’d want by your side in any journey. His character arc is one of the most touching in recent RPG history.
Emotional impact
Few games manage to balance humor, adventure, and emotional depth as well as Sea of Stars does. There are moments of lighthearted joy, moments of gut-wrenching sadness, and everything in between. The story takes unexpected turns, and by the time the credits roll, it’s impossible not to feel deeply connected to the journey.
Rating for story and setting
I have visited multiple aspects of the story and after some thought and objective thinking, I rated the story and setting with an 10.
Gameplay and mechanics
Core gameplay mechanics
Taking heavy inspiration from Chrono Trigger while improving upon it, Sea of Stars introduces an active turn-based battle system that feels modern and engaging. Timed attacks and blocks add a layer of skill, while the locks system requires strategic planning to break enemy abilities before they unleash devastating attacks.
Difficulty and balance
The game strikes a perfect balance between challenge and accessibility. Battles require thought and strategy, but they never feel unfair. The variety of skills, combos, and enemy designs keep encounters fresh throughout the entire game.
Pacing of the game
The pacing is near flawless. The story unfolds naturally, new mechanics are introduced at the right moments, and exploration never feels like a chore. Side content is meaningful, and the post-game is well worth diving into.
Innovation and uniqueness
While inspired by classic RPGs, Sea of Stars adds so much of its own identity. The seamless blend of puzzles, traversal mechanics, and interactive combat makes it feel like a modern evolution of the genre rather than a simple nostalgia trip.
Controls and user interface
Smooth, responsive, and intuitive. Whether exploring the world, solving puzzles, or battling enemies, everything feels polished and refined.
Microtransactions
None. Just a pure, complete experience with no unnecessary add-ons.
Rating
After combing through many of the mechanics, the pacing and other factors of this game, I rated the gameplay and mechanics with a 10.

Environment and design uniqueness
From lush forests to eerie ruins, each environment is crafted with care and originality. The world feels alive, with every area distinct and memorable.

Music score and how it contributed to the game
A soundtrack that belongs among the all-time greats.the music elevates every moment of the game. From grand orchestral themes to calming town melodies, every piece fits perfectly.

Game Length and content volume
The main story takes around 30-40 hours, with even more content for those who wish to explore further.
Extra Content
The post-game content is fantastic. Completing it unlocks a secret ending, which adds even more depth to the story. This is one of those games where seeing everything is absolutely worth the effort.
Replay value
With hidden secrets, deep combat mechanics, and the sheer joy of experiencing the story again, Sea of Stars is a game that invites multiple playthroughs.
Rating
After thoughtful consideration, I decided to rate the replayability and game length of Sea of Stars with a 10
Suggestions and comparisons
Suggestions and feedback
Sea of Stars stands proudly on its own, I see no need for suggestions.
Comparisons
- Chrono Trigger – Similar battle system, world exploration, and storytelling.
- Golden Sun – Engaging puzzles and world traversal mechanics.
- Final Fantasy VI – Emotional storytelling and character depth.
Personal experiences and anecdotes
The final boss battle was one of the most intense moments we’ve ever had in a game. After clearing everything and getting the best gear, we still had to fight for 45 minutes in an epic clash that truly felt like the culmination of our journey. Very few games manage to create a final encounter this impactful.
And then there’s Garl. What a character. Funny, kind, and full of heart, he was the soul of our adventure. Every moment with him felt special, and by the end, we had developed an attachment to him unlike any other RPG companion.
The cutscenes were another highlight. For a pixel-art game, the way they were animated made them feel grand and cinematic. Every major story moment was beautifully presented, making the experience even more immersive.
Rating
Taking in all the personal experiences with Sea of Stars, I give it a personal rating of 10.

Beautiful game but felt like a rhythm game after a while. Needs more variet in gameplay.
We never had that problem, you do need to hit the button on the right time!
This is a great game. I played the demo a long time ago and it was very well made and an interesting twist on the classic JRPG
Another person who played the demo, was it fun?
Unfortunately the combat system isn’t for me. Really sad, as I love the art style, the music, the character design, the world design… The little I know of the story seems interesting, too. :/
Sad to hear you do not like this combat system!
Im in crpg camp, not jrpg. But i heard a lot of good things about chrome trigger. But there were some things about different version not remember now but i finally never played it :/ Now this game, you gave amazingy good rating, you really made me interested in it, i will try it no doubt if i have an occassion, thanks.
Chrono Trigger* of course

This one’s been on my whishlist since the screenshot of the week 😀 Awesome to see that you rated it so high. Now I’m even more excited.
Yeah, the screenshot of the week was hard to make, we knew many people would recognize it.

similar to CT and FF 6… both the best of the snes…
gimme! 😀
I don’t think you can compare the characters with each other.
I think we’ve got a nugget here!
Hopefully a golden one!
Co-op RPG with not a single con! -> wow … but of what I read in the review in general, this has to be an amazing RPG! I’ll take a deeper look into this game!
You really should, it is an amazing game!
I’m absolutely agree with you, damn… Today’s JRPGs should take this as a reference, especially when it comes to the love for the game and the goal of making you enjoy it (they need to REMOVE TRANSACTIONS). Graphics and art style indeed is the best part of the game and it also reminded me of those old games. In general, I think i’ll buy this game when then price goes down.
Yeah, it is indeed a good RPG, and no micro stuff, I hope it will be discounted soon for you!
I love how this review highlights Sea of Stars’ beautiful pixel art and fun combat. It really captures that classic RPG feel while still bringing something new. Reading this makes me want to try it even more!
I am glad my review inspired you to try this game!

Wow, a 10 out of 10! I definitely need to get this game soon then!
Great job with the review! 😀
Agreeing on this lol. This looks like a perfect game from Sven’s view, and I’ve heard only good about it from the others.
However, I believe I need to play Chrono Trigger before visiting this one to properly experience it. 😀
Yeah, I don’t give a 10 lightly!
I totally loved how they took inspiration from Chrono Trigger yet managed to not make it just another cheap duplicate. Characters, world-building, and art style were on point; no complaints. Maybe the combat system could be improved or use some variety.
It is hard to do!
The art style looks absolutely stunning
It truly does!
I love pixel art games and I’ve been wanting to play this one!
Pixel art games can be really fun!
Agreed, this game is just perfect, first i played the demo, then i… pirated it for a couple hours, then I stopped and bought it on Xbox, and I’ve been enjoying it in co-op and single-player, the music, the gameplay, the sstory, the art-style, EVERYTHING IS JUST PERFECT.
This game is indeed perfect!
Honestly, if this game wasn’t turn based, it would be 100% up my alley. I don’t hate turn based games, but, I prefer games that don’t have turn based (usually atleast)
This one could be fun if you try it!
