Introduction

Today we are going to run straight into the bullets in a bullet hell game, this is a rogue lite bullet hell game! And it features a guy, that makes no sense when he talks. Is sarcastic, and actually comes over like a mean kid that wants to hold a tantrum while killing aliens, Serious Sam! We are going to look at Serious Sam Tormental, a game that has been released not too long ago. It is time to delve into Mental’s mind and shoot up some baddies while collecting new weapons, there will not be a story, you will just try to uncover things in Mental’s mind, the prime focus is the gameplay!

What did I think before playing Serious Sam Tormental?

I always love to play Serious Sam, and I have already reviewed some of the Serious Sam franchise, and it has been quite some time since we reviewed one of these games. Recently, Serious Sam Tormental has been released, and I decided to jump into this rogue lite adventure, what kind of evil enemies will be awaiting us!? For more information, I went to the Steam Page!

The Steam Page

The thing to expect from rogue lite games is off course, that if you die, you will need to start over again and the levels will have changed. This game is not different, you will find new weapons and upgrades as you go through the game, making it easier. There is even a co-op game and other characters to unlock! As you go through the levels, you can upgrade your gun! Beware of, mimics, or blowing up the outer part of the wall.

Rating

I rate Serious Sam Tormental with a 7.1 before playing.
It is time to blow up some enemies with guns, shoot at them until they die!

Gameplay

The gameplay is fairly simple, you enter Mental’s mind and off course there are a lot of enemies that want to destroy you! The best way to get rid of them, is to blast them to smithereens. As you kill enemies, you will get experience points and new items will be unlocked for other runs. Thus, it is important to pick up the yellow crystals that enemies drop, these can also be used as currency to buy upgrades.

As you make your way through the stages, more difficult enemies will try to stop you in your path. When some of the bigger enemies are almost dead, you can roll through them. This will grant you a chance to get a key. These can be used to open chests for new upgrades, more experience points, or they can be used to enter special rooms. If a chest is walking, it is a mimic. However, if you collect enough keys and save them, you might be able to unlock new characters with other abilities.

There is also a vault where you can get new items for your runs. The keys for this vault can be obtained by completing certain challenges. You can also adjust the difficulty of the runs to gain more experience points. At the end of each stage, a boss will be waiting to beat you up, if you manage to win, you can upgrade your gun. You also have a melee weapon, and a serious weapon, which can either be a machine gun, a crossbow, or many other items! Now, get shooting and annihilate those enemies!

Rating

I rate the gameplay of Serious Sam Tormental with a 7.9
While this might not be the best rogue lite out there, the runs give a lot of satisfaction, and the difficulty is just right. It might take some time before you grasp the mechanics correctly.

Sound and Graphics

Graphics

The graphics are basic, but they are still looking good, it is clear this is simplistic but still stylish. There is quite a variety in enemies, and the levels look fun. The traps are annoying as hell, but they are clearly traps. Jumping looks a bit strange, but you will be mostly seeing bullets fly through the levels, just, don’t blow up the outer wall and you will be fine!

Sound

The soundtracks are fine in Serious Sam Tormental, nothing too unique or special, but it keeps you shooting those monsters. In the beginning of the game, there is voice acting, I don’t know why it is scrapped for the rest of the game.

Rating

I rate the sound and graphics of Serious Sam Tormental with a 6.4.
While not perfect, the graphics are mostly enjoyable.

What did I think after playing Serious Sam Tormental?

There are many fun things to explore in this game, for example the many ways that you can upgrade your weapon. Or the tools that you can find in the levels to help you succeed. Like the Ankh that will resurrect you once. It is off course, quite stupid if you run into the outer wall after that and get an instant kill. Or to run into a mimic, right after that.

There is also a co-op mode, while fun, it can be a bit chaotic on the screen with that many bullets! The boss arenas also change with each run, this might throw you off guard. Always keep an eye on your surroundings, you never know when a bomb might spawn next to you!

Rating

I rate Serious Sam Tormental with a 7.0 after playing
Are you up for a hectic rogue like game!?

What are my personal thoughts about Serious Sam Tormental?

I had hoped, the voice acting would continue throughout the game, I think it is strange that is just suddenly stops. However, the gameplay is very fun, unless you run into the outer wall.

Rating

My personal Rating of Serious Sam Tormental is a 6.9.
Time to get, serious!

Last Words

Pros

Cons

If there would be voice acting for the whole game, this game would have gotten a higher rating, it is also a good idea, to not blow up the outer walls of the levels!

As someone not too familiar with the Serious Sam series but fond of rogue lites and bullet hells, I think I would enjoy this game quite a bit, though I’m not sure it would be a good introduction to the franchise as a whole. Also, the only voice acting being in the tutorial of the game reminds me of many, many mobile games, where the same thing applies. I suppose this is a tactic to entice people into the game while not spending too much money on voice actors.
