Introduction

Today we are going to review a game that is usually not my style, Soul Calibur 6! Can you resist the evil power of the soul edge? Or will you succumb to its evil power as your soul gets taken over? There are many different characters, and the special character in this game is Gerald from the witcher series. Can you show off your combos and beat up your enemies? Who will be your favorite character?

What did I think before playing Soul Calibur 6?

While I am not per se a fan of fighting games like Soul Calibur, I was interested in reviewing this game. As I have played this game before and previous installments as well. I do have to say, Soul Calibur 2 was my favorite, perhaps, I should revisit that game as well. It has been a long time since I played Soul Calibur 6 but once again, I decided to dive into this game for a review! For a refresher, we went to the Steam page!

The Steam Page

It is quite clear, you might need to pay a hefty sum of money for all characters or season passes. While that is not necessary, all the DLC characters have their own story that you would like to enjoy. So, you will be spending easily over 100 bucks for this game, now that you know, it is time to answer the question, is this game worth your time and money? There is only one way to find out, play this game off course!

Rating

I rate Soul Calibur 6 with an 8,7 before playing.
Even Geralt from the Witcher wants to join this game, he was like, oh great, I want to punch some dweebs!

Story

It has been ages since I have actually invested myself in the story line of Soul Calibur, which might be good as this game acts as a soft reboot with two story modes that connect with each other.

Everyone wants to have Soul Edge that Siegfried has claimed after Soul Edge had been lost after the battle with a pirate name Cervantes. Then you will follow the story of 21 characters, and your own custom character, it gets really complicated at points but in the end, it will all make sense. This might be the best story ever for a fighting game!

Rating

I rate the story of Soul Calibur with a 9.8.
The story is just so big, it also involves time travel, in a fighting game, yeah, I know. It is, complicated, you really need to play the game to understand it.

Gameplay

As there are two story modes, along with online gameplay, it is going to be hard to explain everything in the gameplay section. First off, we are going to talk about the soul chronicles. Which acts more like a visual novel instead of a real fighting game where you go from stage to stage and kill things. It has real story and depth to it with amazing graphics. Sometimes the story gets interrupted to issue a fight, as you get further into the visual novel of a character, the fights will get more difficult.

The gameplay of fights is exactly what you would expect, you perform amazing combos while kicking your opponent all around the stage. There is quite some space to beat up your opponent. As you have free moment in a 3D stage. It is always smart to make use of the space that you have in a level. Rushing in and smashing your opponent to pulp, is not always the answer. Your fight style depends on what weapon your character is using, you can always use the training mode for getting the hang of combos.

You can also create your own character, like, go wild! Then you can go on a different story mode, in which you once again will need to fight opponents, you will also encounter characters from the soul chronicle, so, it might be important to do those first. Or you might not understand what is going. But it is quite easy to understand, everything in this game revolves around the Soul Edge and its evil power!

Rating

I rate the gameplay of Soul Calibur 6 with a 8.9.
While this game is easy to pick up and play, it is hard to master!

Sound and Graphics

Graphics

The graphics of Soul Calibur 6 are quite something, not only do you have the ability to make your own character, the other characters have great animations, the battlefields are sick. You almost forget to smash your opponent to pull since you are too busy looking at the scenery. The visual novel style is amazing for people that like those kinds of games!

Sound

There are many different soundtracks and sound effects in Soul Calibur 6, and they are perfect! Not even mention the voice acting, it is, splendid, there is no other word!

Rating

I rate the sound and graphics of Soul Calibur 6 with a 9.9.
This game might have the best graphics of any fighting game that exists so far, not to mention the many cutscenes and voice acting!

What did I think after playing Soul Calibur 6

While it has been ages since I played Soul Calibur, I did enjoy the fights, but this is just not my kind of game. While muscle memory helps me with this game, I rather play another game. My wife is also not interested in this game. If I do have to choose one of the characters I liked the most, it would either be Nightmare or Geralt.

There are so many visual novels that make the story clear, it can get a bit complicated but if you follow every soul chronicles and the other story mode, you will understand what happened and how epic the story is!

Rating

I rate Soul Calibur 6 with a 9.2 after playing.
If you like a mix between fighting and storytelling, this might be a great game for you!

What are my personal thoughts about Soul Calibur 6?

I absolutely, hated this game with passion. There is no way around it, I just, hated it. While the game mechanics are just superb, and the game is epic, it is just, not for me.

Rating

My personal Rating of Soul Calibur 6 is a 2.3.
I am glad that I am done with this game.

Sometimes, even if the game is great to the core, it does not fit our gaming preferences… it happened to me multiple times 🙂 I personally like SCVI very much, but the DLC you need to buy to have all the characters is too much for me.

I wasn’t expecting this much story from a fighting game. That’s pretty cool. It sucks that you have to spend over a $100 to get all the content.

Nice review! DLC – it’s cancer for FG.
I do not like that the story paused, because of the high difference in the complexity of the tests.

Played this game before and I liked it, although I prefer Mortal Kombat or street fighter much more than this.
Really looking forward to Street fighter 6!

So true. I suck at fighting games so bad and most of them are pretty much worthless as solo games but I can tell this is a good one. Definitely unique in the genre.

Yeah, it is not per se, that I suck in these games, my attention just drifts away at sometimes, these are just not my type of games, yet I do want to review them!

I have to admit, I laughed when you gave your personal score at the end! I’m glad the game is good in many aspects despite not being your kind of game, though the overall cost of the DLC seems WAY too steep for me.

I have the fact that in most modern beat’em’up games, you just can’t get all fighters without buying a DLC. I miss the old dass. :/
