Introduction

Today we are going to play another weird game, Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion,  in this game you play as a turnip. You can even wield items while not even having arms! That is not even the weirdest thing going on, an onion has claimed your house and forces you to do tasks. There is also a train where you can fight monsters.

What did I think before playing Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion?

My wife and I were scrolling through the Xbox game list for another game to review. We came across a weird game that features a turnip that is alive. It seems that this game is a mix between an action game and a puzzle game. We did not know what to expect when we started this game or how long it would take to beat this game, thus we went to the information page of Steam.

The Steam Page

It is quite a simple Steam Page, but we do learn that there are dungeons with loads of puzzles. What stood out, though, was that there would be many tax documents to rip apart. There are also hats to equip, it seems like we found cat ears.

Rating

I rate Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion with a 6.8 before playing.
While it seems like a fun game, it feels like a game that you could finish very quickly.

Story

The story starts with a turnip, a simple turnip that is weirdly enough alive. However, an onion wants him to pay taxes. As any reasonable turnip would, he shreds the document. This angers the onion, your job as the turnip is to help the onion to get your house back.

Rating

I rate the story of Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion with a 6.1.
My wife and I were wondering what in the world was going on.

Gameplay

Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion starts very odd immediately, there are talking fruit everywhere! If you want to gain any items, you will need a watering can to grow plants. This item is needed to get a sword, otherwise you will not be able to defeat enemies! To dodge, you can trip yourself, however you start with only three hearts.

As you gain new equipment, you will be able to complete dungeons where you need to find items for the onion. You will also find documents that you can rip up. There are also hats that you can collect and equip. To find all of these items, you will need to search every nook and cranny.

There are a few items that will grant you new abilities, like moving blocks or even making portals. Can you stop the onion?

Rating

I rate the gameplay of Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion with a 7.3.
This game was a lot of fun but I expected a longer game.

Sound and Graphics

Graphics

The graphics in Turnip Boy are mostly quirky as you talk to acorns, mutated fruit and vegetable, however there is also Jerry, will you kill Jerry? There are quite some areas to explore, but a lot of them look like the others.

Sound

The soundtrack of Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion is fun, but not anything special. The sound effects are fun to listen to.

Rating

I rate the sound and graphics of Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion with a 6.9.
The soundtracks are fun but nothing special.

What did I think after playing Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion?

My wife and I did have fun when playing this game, but it was very short. The bosses were hard until you learn their pattern. There is one boss that you need to face multiple times!

As you continue with your adventure of bringing the onion what he wants, you will unlock new weapons like a shovel. All these items will eventually lead to the truth of your existence. You might even find turnips that are not alive!

Rating

I rate Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion with a 6.7 after playing.
This was a short and mediocre game, fun nonetheless.

What are my personal thoughts about Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion?

My wife enjoyed taking care of the dungeons and bosses in this game. We might even speed run this game in the future, who knows?

Rating

My personal Rating of Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion is a 6.6

Just completed this game on 100%. It’s really fun and these 2 Cons are only ones that I have found. The game need a map or something like that since quest “give item to X” and the first your question is “Who is that X and where I can find him :D” (some quest though tell you the direction where to go)
I’ve started the game yesterday and didn’t unlock any achievements – for some reason game expects save to exist from the start. So today in the morning I’ve got “wall” of achievements after loading into the game 😀
To complete the game on 100% you’ll require complete it 2 times (first run I usually do without any guides, 2nd – with guide since not all actions are obvious)

I’m glad I bought this one! It’s a really fun game, with the short length ensures that it’s going to be on of the few games in my library I actually have completed.

The excuse plot does give the premise of the game an interesting twist, even if it doesn’t add much gameplay-wise.

Dang, the other comments are so old.

I completed this game (100%) just a couple days ago. Was really fun! Although, yeah, quite short… Good thing I didn’t pay for it. 😛
The plot itself is nice, although not exactly what I expected. The dialogues are really funny, which is part of what made me like the game. One of the downsides I found, though… Was the need to backtrack all over the map for certain things.
Pro tip for new players: if you save and exit to the main menu, you’ll respawn at the starting location which is at the center of the map. That can save you quite a lot of time if you are trying to go from one corner of the map to the opposite one, basically making you teleport for half the way! That can also be useful for a speedrun, I suppose. 😛
