Introduction

Today we are going to look at Doom, once again, however, this time we are taking Doom to the mobile. The game we will be looking at is called, Mighty Doom. While it is a shooter, it acts more like a roguelike game where you play runs to find new upgrades to make the next run easier, including skills, and gear. We will be going deeper into that in the gameplay section, but first, we will go to what I thought about the game before playing. There will be no story in this review.

What did I think before playing Mighty doom?

I was planning to make a new list, to see which Doom game is the best, that is when I learned about Mighty Doom, we cannot have a list without having this spin off reviewed! It is time to run and gun, the ad I saw for this game looked good. But, I did not know what to expect from this game. There is only one way to find out, it is time to check out the Google Play Store!

The Google Play Store

It seems we need to not only dodge the monsters but countless bullets. This is a top-down shooter on the Mobile phone. Just as in a rogue-like, you will get abilities that are only for the current run, but you will also get permanent skills. There appears to be many levels while you make your way through even more levels as you will blast demons!

Rating

I rated Mighty Doom with an 8.1 before playing.
This looked a very fun top-down shooter!

Gameplay

The game starts basic, you will be the slayer, appointed to slay the demons and bring them back to the place where they came from, hell! That is the only place demons belong, take up your gun, you might find different guns on the way, and run and gun as you dodge aside from bullet and blast them up.

As you slay demons, you will gain ability points, earn enough of these, and you will be able to pick a new skill after you have cleared the current stage. Most of the stages have 40 levels to clear, with at the end, off course, a major boss. These bosses can be hard to beat, until you start to learn their pattern. If you do die, you can watch and for a free revive!

As you clear more runs, you can gain skill mastery, this is randomized, meaning you might end up with a lot of health, or a lot of damage reduction. You will also get a secondary weapon, for example a rocket launcher or a shotgun. Your ultimate weapon will be a sword. Then you can also level up your slayer or buy better with real money. All the weapons can be upgraded with hard-earned coins if you have the right tokens, it is harder to collect gold than said tokens.

Rating

I rated the gameplay of Mighty Doom with an 8.7
The gameplay mechanics are fun, it is not in and of itself pay to win, but you might need to play many rounds to progress.

Sound and Graphics

Graphics

The graphics remind me a bit of a cartoon—like style. As it all looks very colorful, the stages are a bit small, making it hard to maneuver around the bullets. Luckily, there are also blocks to hide behind. There are different areas and all of them have new demons and bosses to kill.

Sound

The soundtracks and sound effects are precisely what you would think of Doom. They fit well with the game and are very enjoyable.

Rating

I rated the sound and graphics of Mighty Doom with a 7.9
It is clear that the graphics have been made for smartphones.

What did I think after playing Mighty Doom?

The biggest gripe I had with this game, is that it is hard to collect high tier gear. You can fuse equipment to make a higher tier, however since there are quite some weapons, along with their elements, it can be hard to find the same weapons. I also noticed it is hard to actually find usable loot from clearing the levels. You will have more luck with opening free chests and keys that you can claim.

If you are a person who cannot play a long time, you can also use a mining system. It will collect some exp and coins for you, if you want the better version, you will need to watch an ad. But that is not the end of the world. It could have been worse. If you want to clear levels with more ease, you will need to keep up to date with your upgrades.

Rating

I rated Mighty Doom with an 8.2 after playing.
This is a very fun top down shooter!

What are my personal thoughts about Mighty Doom?

Of course, I like the original doom more, and I am not a massive fan of how they handled this game. However, it has good gameplay mechanics and not a boatload of ads.

Rating

My personal Rating of Mighty Doom is a 6.9

As much as I want to play every Doom game there is, I might skip this one. Not really a fan of mobile games and definitely don’t enjoy grinding my heart out for some gear.

I like the use of colours in it compared to the original Doom games but it seems like they’re making the game annoying enough that you need to watch ads for gear, loot, and revival when you die!

The game doesn’t seem too bad for a mobile game and looks fun, but I’d still prefer to play the original DOOM games for demon slaying action.

Mighty Doom? Or Mini Doom. 😀

This would play a lot better if we had a PC port or something, mobile games have limited controls.

Gun variety is cool, but ads are not.
